Bushnell, repre senting tne socialise pariy oi uguon, have requested, a hearing before the board on the question of renewing gas and electric light franchises now in contemplation. The gentlemen appeared before the board of city commissioners last evening eve-ning and stated that the Socialists of Ogden are unalterably opposed to the granting of franchises of any kind to private parties or corporations, and that they are especially opposed to the renewal of 50-year gas and electric elec-tric franchises now sought by certain corporations. Mr. Kennedy stated to the commissioners commis-sioners that, inasmuch as there is no provision In law for a vote of the people on the question of granting franchises, the Socialists were constrained con-strained to ask the privilege of a voice before the board, prior to action ac-tion on the question about to be taken tak-en up. It is expected that within a short time the city commission will take into consideration the renewal of franchiso for light and gas to the Utah Power &. Light company, and the Utah Light & Traction company, and it is said that the Socialists will undortako to convlnco the commissioners commis-sioners that the city should own and control those utilities for public purposes. |
