Show oo FREE TRADE PLAN FOR CANAL ZONE "Washington, D. C, Jan. 19 A project pro-ject for making part of the Panama Canal zone a free trade territory with a view to establishing there a sort of clearing house of north, central and south American commerce, Is being worked out by Representative Copeley of Illinois, who will shortly oresent It to congress In the form of a bill The plan is along the general lines of a free zone nrrangement tried out in Hamburg, Hong Kong and Singapore. "A few manufactures," Mr. Copeley said, "could get together and send down a full cargo of goods, put It Into a warehouse and from there ship to all parts of the world." Mr. Copeley said that in Hamburg the plan was working well, ?,401 acres having been set aside ihere' by the German government for the upbuilding up-building of its trade. At Singapore, there is another free zone, where the trade amounts to more than on-a seventh sev-enth of all the combined Imports and exports of America. |
