Show WIRELESS MESSAGES RECEIVED 8? II UTAH BOY Salt Lake, Dec. .10. Tho Tribune says: For the first time in the history his-tory of this city, wireless message's were received Saturday night about 9 p m by Sidney Serr. University of Utah student and experimentalist In wireless telegraphy, residing at 1389 Third Kat street The message, mes-sage, according t young Sperry, were from San Francisco and Point Lonia, Pacific coast stations. Mr. Sprry had just adjusted his reeeUink' detector Saturday night a few minutes before 9 o'clock, when the message, presumably from San Francisco, came bussing into his receiver. re-ceiver. The young experimenter was of course verv much surprised and, In amateurish surprise, attempted to note th' message. Despite his inexperience inex-perience In the actual receiving of messnges, Mr. Sperry was able to do termine the meaning of a part of tho message, which wag sent in the Continental Con-tinental code. Catches Part of Answer. While waiting several minutes for a renewal of the pleasant experience, Mr. Sperrv was rewarded with a direct di-rect answer to the former message In the same code from Point Ixma, also a Pacific coast station. Because of the fact that the recent wireless laws passert by congress prohibit the publication of any wireless messages mes-sages except In times of distress and i mergency, Mr. Sperry refused to make them known. Mr. Sperry said yesterday: The results of these experiments should mean much to the people of Salt Lake and Utah in general It has always been the belief of local telegraphers and electricians that the Institution of a high power commercial commer-cial wireless station here would be an impossibility because of the peculiar effects which the mountains are alii al-ii ged to exercise upon the transmission transmis-sion of wireless messages. It is true in view of my recent experiments, hot tha mnnnhlns ctrntl'-'rh influ ence the receiving of messages in the daytime, but it is an absolute fact that wireless messages can be received re-ceived here with little or no trouhlo In the night time. It is quite obvious therefore, that the organization of a commercial high power wireless sta tion in this vicinity such as was recently re-cently agitated for erection near Buena Vista would be beneficial to local business men. Such an undertaking under-taking would be very feasible and would insure far-reaching results for this intermountain region Has Complete Outf;t. Mr Sperrv has a complete wireless wire-less receiving outfit which Is his own handiwork and financed by himself He has been Interested alone telegraphic tele-graphic lines for about three years, and during this time was associated with many school chums with whom he com;'" t. d telephone and t fir-graph wires for private communication. These lines were erected by local telephone tel-ephone companies, and after the ex-p ex-p nditure of much labor and time the boys succeeded in completing their private lines. About a year ago however, how-ever, the inspector of the telephone company condemned the lines operated opera-ted by these young enthusiasts because be-cause the wires were alleged to have been dangerously connected on the property poles. Despite the protests of the youths, the lines, Mr Sperry says, were torn a sunder and almost entirely demolished. Nothing daunted, however, the youths began the compilation of wireless wire-less Instruments in the hope of installing in-stalling a complete wireless outfit. Several of the young men however, soon dropped from the league, leaving leav-ing Sidney Sperry and Heber Nelson alone in the enterprise. Sperry Left Alone. Before the idea could be furthered very materially, Mr. Nelson was called call-ed on a mission to Denmark, which l ft Sperry the onh man left to operate op-erate the original idea for the erection erec-tion of the station After three years he has succeeded in his purpose and says he is now safe from all possible danger of interference on the part danger of interference on the part of local companies, through permission from the authorities of the state. The Sperry wireless outfit includes a perfect system composed of seven wires two feet apart and connected with stakes; an iron pole 105 feet high and a tree serving as a pole, which connect wires; a lead-in to operating instruments from the aerial system, which connect? the wires with a receiving transformer by which a proper tuning of the wires are affected. affect-ed. A variable condensor and a detector, de-tector, together with a pair of highly sensitive telephone wireless receivers, comprise the remainder of the outfit I The operating; room Is 'n ,ne ase-I ase-I ment of the Sperry residence, and Is I furnished w ith al ' necessary raochan-j leal fixtures. |
