Show 00 WHEN TO SOW YOUR SUGAR BEET SEED Weber county Is now nonrlng the season of the year when the hus bandman will have to plant his fields, and it is well to make the neoesear preparations to be ready for this work when the proper time arrives. It Is generally ronceded that those who plant their fields when the land Is in proper condition to receive the seed giving the crop the advantage of the early spring showers, get the best results. Many of the farmors in this and other oth-er counties are sugar beet growers and foveral of them have sugar be: drills, in which others have a share Now is the time for those having beet drills to carefully examine same and see if there are any accessories necessary nec-essary to put them In good running order If extras are needed they should v.aete no time getting same so everything will be In readiness when the planting season arrives. Usually planting begins about the e.iriy part of April three weeks from now Experience has taught the farmers that early beets arc generally the most profitable If seed Is planted In Man h. bets have sometimes been nipped by frosts April, as a rule, Is soon enough to plant sugar beet seed Planting should he done when the land is in proper condition not too wet. When the seed Is planted In good season the land Is moist enouch to bring the plants up and they get the early showers Seed should not be planted deep when plenty of moisture Is In the ground. Shallow planting, when dore early, is the best. In fact, beets ne-er ne-er should be planted deep because If they are they do not come up They grow part way up and then turn back and die if seed is planted early, as a rule there is not so much danger of a crust forming as there is when seed Is planted late, when storms come and the sun Is hot It would be of advantage to each grower If he would so arrange his work as to be in readiness when the land is in condition to plant By do ing this many dollars will be saved and many more tons of beets realized If those having large fields of beets have no drill would suggest that thej secure one as soon as possible in or der to plant as rapidly while the land is in the best condition to receive the seed. Men should be selected to run the drills who will bo careful not to run the seed on the top of the ground and also not plant it too deep. It is im nortant that the rows be run a pro per distance apart. If they are run too clode together, when harvested some of the beets will be cut up, with a loss to the farmer. There arc about three weeks in each spring when the land is in the best shape, as fai as moisture is concerned, con-cerned, to plant seed If land is too wet it cannot be properly prop-erly worked until it dries out, but if any is ready, by all meanB work that part and plant Every drill lu the hands of the farmers should be run from early morning until late In tbe evening while the land is in proper condition It is very important that every farmer work his land at the proper time so he can make a good seedbed If clods are in the way, making It rough, it is difficult to hoe the ground |
