Show oo EMBASSADOR WILSON SHOULD EXPLAIN Embassador Wilson is being called to account by the papers of the United States Yesterday the Standard said the action of our representative in the city of Mexico, in playing a pari in the Intrigue which ended in the overthrow ot the Madero "overnmcnt, required an explanation from the embassador em-bassador Today's Salt Lake Trlhun? presents the same view in the following fol-lowing editorial. If it Is true, as reported from Mexico, Mex-ico, that Embassador Wilson admits his Intrigue with General Huerta and Felix Diaz for the overturning of the Madero government, he has committed commit-ted a very grave international offense. We have been disposed to think that Embassador Wilson was a valuable representative of his government In Mexico He was evidently zealous In the protection of American Interests and In the care and protection whlc!i he extended to Americans in peril. Hut if he has been guilty of conniving with insurgents for the overthrow of the existing government to which he was accredited, no plea that he can make I that the overturn of that government 'was advantageous to American inter ests will avail. We do not send em bassadora to any country to meddle In the domestic affairs of that country mm h less to put clown the existing government to which that embassador is sent, no matter how advantageous he may consider the changi iu 1p n, only exception that we recall to the absolute rule thai embassadors to foreign for-eign countries niuBt keep their Lauds off the Internal affairs of those countries, coun-tries, is the case where President Cleveland sent Mr Blount of Georgia to Hawaii to overthrow the government govern-ment which had deposed the royal dynasty dy-nasty In that fake monarchy. Mr Blount was accredited to President Dole, who was al the head of the e tabllshed and republican government In Honolulu, and was enjoined to haul down the American flag and withdraw American protection from the government govern-ment of President Dole while Blount was accredited to President Dole as President Cleveland's "great and good friend." But the deposed royal rule was impossible The Interests of the progressive people aud progressive business in Hawaii could not be Induced In-duced to consent to the re-establish-ment of the old dynasty, and upon the change of government the McKinlcy administration promptly recognized the change and Incorporated Hawaii aB a territorial appendage of the United Uni-ted States Nothing of this kind is possible in Mexico, however, and as the interference interfer-ence of Mr Blount was repudiated not only by Hawaii but by the United Stales, so the interference of Embassador Embas-sador Wilson must be repndiated by this country as well as denounced in Mexico There would be no sense of Set unty or good faith whatever if our cmliaflsadors were permitted to engage en-gage in Inlrigues of the sort now xt tributed t Embassador Wilson, and unless he is able to clear his skirts from complicity In the overthrow ot the Madero government, it will be the dutj of the present administration to remove him forthwith nn |
