Show says demagogues may fatten on loss of party fealty columbus 0 nov 9 governor horrick tonight gave a statement to the associated press in which he says the people 0 ohio by a substantial plurality have defeated me for governor I 1 bow to their will and trust that their welfare may be the only aim ot the new administration this overthrow of tho republican party in ohio was not caused by business depression or industrial adversity anywhere in abo state or nation it was not caused by any mismanagement or corruption on the condition ot the slat government it was not caused by any discontent on the part of the people with the record of achievements of the republican party in the administration of state adaire during the last fourteen years it was shown conclusively in the campaign that the business affairs of tie state had been well managed that al the states debt had been paid that there is a splendid surplus in the treasury that the state institutions have been honestly effectively and economically administered and that no where in any office or department of the state government has there been any breath of scandal or of official misconduct in the legislative department of tho government the record ot the republican party has been equally as clean it has given the people wise and progress he laws and especially in the matter of moral advancement and temperance reforms and in the way of a juster and more equitable system of taxation the party has deserved public confidence and approval but despite all these things the people of ohio have swept away from the moorings of truth by a wave of prejudice and suspicion undoubtedly there Is a wealtny spirit of moral reform sina a widespread insistence apon courage and honesty in public officers awing manifested all over the land that spirit las shown itself in the election of jerome in new york the triumph of weaver in philadelphia and earlier in the breaking down of party lines in massachusetts minnesota and missouri this tact and these events made it easy to excite the suspicion inflame the conscience and mislead the impulse of the people of ohio the real issues 0 the campaign were forgotten and the passion that was appealed to throughout the was to strike down some thing destroy something avenge some fancied wrong avert some fancied danger the greatest danger now confronting the american people is the readiness in response to some sudden whim or pretest to desert party principles and follow some individual leadership in its stead may may advance some personal ambitious bit ious but can accomplish no good to society it offers the mosta janutol fields tor the demagogue and the iconoclast and while some gap abma be swept into power upon a popular wave that overrides prin strain upon our institutions and upon the fundamental truths which lie atlee bottom of our institutions and upon the fundamental truths which lie at the bottom of our government will leave the structure weaker gather than stronger here is ohio in this campaign and elsewhere in other political contests wa have had too majia stances of that spirit which is ready to defame and destroy in order to profit by noise the democratic party Is the immediate beneficiary in this state what I 1 said repeatedly in the campaign is borne out already by tho attitude of that party since the dec tion its leaders everywhere are proclaiming my defeat as a democratic victory the attempt to give national significance 13 already apparent for attention Is being called to the tac that the brannock bill and pool bill and the baseless charges ot bossism were lost sight of in the general impulse to strike down the republican party i bavo no other regrets I 1 discharge any duties as governor of ohio with an eye and purpose devoted solely to the best interests of all the people my conscience Is clear what I 1 did with respect to the brannock Dran nocK law was done in the interest of justice and morality and intended to strengthen that measure as a temperance law I 1 would do the same thing over again the measures I 1 vetoed 1 would veto again the extravagant appropriations that I 1 decline to approve I 1 would decline to approve again if the people of ohio defeated me because they disapproved ot my action with respect to these measures they acted wisely for if I 1 had been given a second term I 1 would have been actuated by the same motives and I 1 would have pursued the same course when ever the occasion arose from these same people in whose ultimate judg ment and sense of justice I 1 have the profoundest faith tor my successor that support and confidence which should always encourage the public servant and I 1 trust tor the exercise of the honest purpose to serve the general welfare he may receive that approval to which an upright conscience cons cince Is entitled |
