| Show STOLEN BALLOT BOXES ARE RECOVERED FROM RIVER attorney general myer Is informed of their finding by tug one stolen box restored to jerome new york nov gen oral mayor stated tonight that he had received information or talo recovery from the north river 0 certain ballot boxes used in ho election of last he said ha matter was andr attorney general slayer left ila ot flee at saying expected developments had not taken placa and that nothing ba gained by his downtown any longer mr mayar to discuss the reported finding of the ballot boxa in the river further iban ito say tha had conio to him id said the boxes were picked up by a tug A ballot box alleged to have been stolen and discovered by accident tonight was taken to district attorney geromes Je romes and closely examined new york nov 9 the contest over the mayoralty election inaugurated by william R the municipal ownership candidate developed interesting and spectacular features today for twelve hours the boxes containing nearly ballots cast in last tuesdays election choked the streets in the vicinity of the headquarters of the board 0 election in sixth avenue between forty first and forty second streets the ballot boxes had been gathered during tho night by the police and conveyed in patrol wagons to the election boards headquarters there the officials refused to receive the ballot boxes and ithe police acting andor a court order signed by justice gaynor compelling the police authorities to turn the ballots over to the election board had nothing to do bufa remain outside and await the pleasure of the election officials apprised of the situation the attorneys for mr hearst appeared before justice dickey ot the state supreme court and secured from him an order compelling john R voorhis president of the board ot elections to accept the ballots the order was served promptly and the ballots then were receipted for by the election board under strong guard the patrol wagons containing the boxes were driven to various warehouses in this city and brooklyn where the ballots were stored subject to the orders of the election board state attorney juliua mayor biad an important conference this afternoon with district attorney jerome after which it was decided that the district attorneys odea would remain open until midnight tonight superintendent cf c f elections morgan appeared before mayor and jeromo with six of his deputies and placed evidence before the prosecuting official another feature of the contest today was the announcement by the citizens union that it would join the forces investigating the charges of fraud and wrongdoing at this election its prime object being to insure a new election law iti the state of new york attorney general mayor said tonight district attorney jerome has placed at my disposal the machinery of his office and will operate cooperate co with me in any way as I 1 will with him in the prosecution of of lenses against the elective franchise assistant district attorneys and are to devote themselves to this work in conjunction deputy attorney general lason and assistants the attorney general received a large bundle of subpoenas from the district attorney and immediately put several election deputies at work scry ing them charges that several ballot boxes had been stolen before the returns reported and that others were found unsealed ere made during the day the investigation of the election promises to be the most thorough ever made in new york city mayor mcclellan today engaged counsel among them being alton B parker ex judge of the court of appeals and democratic candidate for president last year to represent him during the mayoralty contest A statement was issued from mr hearses He arsts headquarters tonight saying that an examination of the alleged detective ballots waldi were thrown out on election day shows more thau which he declares should have been counted for him it is asserted that these ballots were marked with a cross beneath the municipal ownership emblem and in the circle over mr je romes name mr hearst says these ballots should be counted for him pending a judicial decision as to their validity he assorts that if these were accredited to him he would bo elected without a recount of the entire vote 1 police commissioner mcadoo issued a statement tonight formally explaining pla ining how the came to have possession of the ballot boxes he says that according to custom tor many years past the board of elections has asked the police department to take care of the boxes the board had no fa at its command for caring for the boxes as the commissioner says was illustrated today hen the ballots were kept waiting on the streets for more than twelve hours policemen have been detailed to guard the various warehouses where the ballots are stored |
