Show railroading IN AND OUT OF E buckingham general superintendent of the harriman lines passed through ogden en route fo the north where ho rill look over the construction work on the yellowstone park extension six engines are en route to ogden from the sacramento shops upon their they will be turned over to the union pacific company to be placed in service out of ogden the engines arc leased from the southern pacific owing to the shortage of power on the union pacific being such that they are unable to handle the heavy trade among the winter orders of the pullman company jut issued is ono that announces that effective novem her ast 1st porters will not bo allowed to brush the clothes bf passengers except in the rear car superintendent E C manson master mechanic luckett and resident engineer thomas fitzgerald arrived last evening from a trip 0 inspection over the salt lake division henry kerwin has been employed as clerk la tho office of the master mechanic at the shops and will look after the clerical duties assigned to the roundhouse foreman the machinists at the southern pacific machine shops are enjoying a holiday owing to a break in the dl ael motor which furnishes aba power to run the lathes and machinery at the shoat the men were laid off and told that their would not ba required until further notice it Is presumed however that the break will be repaired and the engine in working order by next monday morning the street car which has been awaiting disposition in the local freight yards for the past two weeks has been ordered west As stated some few daya since the car was too high to permit of it being handled through the tunnels and goow sheds which have to be encountered on the westbound trip from ogden to san itan casco the car was held at and inspected by officials or the rapid transit company and also by the bamberger people but neither seemed to think that tho car could be used on these linas the car will go west today and to sparks but owing to the fact that it cannot go through the snow on the sierra nevada mountains it undoubtedly will be abat west from sparks on its own trucks A telegraph office is to be established at cobre nevada the terminal of the nevada northern railroad to ely now in course of construction an I 1 outfit car which is being fitted up at the car shops wll be used until such time as plans for the station buildings can be executed A work train in charge of conductor van tassell and engineer frank freeman has been placed at cobre which means that the work 0 laying steel will commence immediately george W coe tha popular machinist employed on the wheel lathe at the southern pacific machine shops met with a very painful accident short ly after this morning he was about to adjust the latha when the engine upon which he was en making repairs slipped and the two first fingers of the right hand were caught between the shaft and the wheel and badly smashed he was given temporary attention at the shops and then sent to dr ns who dressed the injured member the opinion ot the doctor at this time Is that no serious are ble to set in airs E C manson wite of superintendent manson of tho southern pa is a salt lake claitor vl aitor winton exhibition car passed through ogden this afternoon on union pacific no 9 and left on southern pacific no 1 for the coast yesterday witnessed the heaviest passenger travel the union yards have had tor some time during the awen ty four hours 29 trains entered and 27 left the depot making u total ot ag trains in and out of this city the colonist trains which were sent west contained fifteen and seventeen cars to a section and six extra trains were required to handle the business at one time between and people were on the depot platform and trains were up and started west heavily loaded as fast as cars and motive power could be furnished the rush is almost at an end now and after sunday officials say that traffic will lap se into its nor nort t mal condition the uck of cars with which to handle the business Is still the problem with which the railroad are struggling these days the coal cars are kept in the beet business in an effort to keep this work moving in hopes of seeing the end within a few days it is hoped that within a short time the cars which have been detained in the east will begin to arrive and can bo pressed into service |
