Show CLEVELAND ADMIRED REED but ha not time to act As a derector of memorial fund portland aio nov C the letter which former president grover cleveland wrote to the thomas B reed memorial association in answer to a request that his name he included in the list of the directors with his consent was made public today and Is as follows your recent letter asking me to become a director of the thomas B reed memorial association Is at hand I 1 had great admiration for mr reed and great respect for his ability I 1 think it is eminently proper that his high character and public service should be fittingly memorialized it seems to me however eliat this should be undertaken by those who were nearer to afan in every way than I 1 can claim to have been another reason stronger than this for hesitation is found in my reluctance to be identified with a project to which I 1 cannot give the leaba attention I 1 am not at all satisfied to be nominally a director in such a movement without performing any useful duty and this would be my caca predicament it I 1 should accept such a place in the directorate of your association 1 I do not want toi be suspected of ungraciousness or lack of interest but if I 1 may be allowed to modestly contribute instead of appearing as a director I 1 shall feel much more comfortable the letter was accompanied by a generous contribution |
