FARMS TO OFFER -.r ( -- , STREAM OF WESTWARD HOMESEEKERS ' SHOULD BE MADE TO SEE ADVANTAGES OF THIS PART OF UTAH FARMER WHO ' HAS RETURNED FROM CALIFORNIA SAYS HE PREFERS WEBER COUNTY THIS STATE . IS NOT ADVERTISED AS IT SHOULD BE. - ' t ' 1 If James Russell Lowoll had lived near Ogden, he would never have used "And what, Is so rare as a day In June" for the first line In his ira- -pt mortal poem. Instead he would have j praised the exquisite fall weather for " which this region is noted. When ' you think it over, you come to the '" understanding that after all we are e not unfortunate In regard to climate, i., but have In fact an ideal climate 5 which requires only a little advertis-"1 - -ing to bring travelers here. .'; As has been said by the Ogden ; . Publicity bureau In their letters to the former citizens of Nebraska, wc " have just as many opportunities here ? as in any other part of the, UnitedE. U States, but these opportunities'' areSr not known to the great outside because be-cause they are not advertised. Now1 is the time for the boosters of the -city and county to get together to tell every stranger within our gates just what advantages Weber county has to offer. We know from the numerous buildings being erected that confidence confi-dence has been placed In this city, so now while the ball Is rolling is the time to get behind that sphere and keep it in motion. Every season In the year, the rail- i roads carry homeseekers through, Ogden Og-den to the Pacific coast. The coast has been advertised by tons and tons of literature sent out through the mails or distributed by the different railroads. So much advertising has been done by the coast states that even some among us are inclined to believe that California or somo other state excels in opportunities; that other states are able to offer better advantages to the homeBoeker. But that is not the case. Listen to what a resident of Weber county has to say. This man lived in California for six years and Is now farming In Weber We-ber county: "Weber county Is little known to the outside world. Even Utahns do not appreciate tho richness of this land and many emigrate to t places where they think there are better op- , portunities. In a word, Weber county has been overlooked. Opportunities will always be here, and the scope of activity will broaden as Weber county coun-ty is fertilized by printers' Ink, but the early bird will get the juiciest worm here aB everywhere else. "The summers aro warm but not hot, while the winters are just cold enough to lend a crispness and tang. The rainfall is ample for the needs of tho farmers and we may make the boast that almost anything will grow." This man said many inoie things and the pi oof that he is conect lies in tho fact thai he was able to make more money from an acre of land In Weber county near Ogden than he could In several parts of California. According to government statistics, the states of the Union as a whole show a gain in population of 21 per cent. Eleven states of the Pacific slope show an increase of CCS per cent, and six states more directly related to the coast show an aggregate aggre-gate gain of S4 per cent. The cause 01 this disparity Is general, due to the fact that settlement began of the Atlantic coast aiid the natural X .trend has been westwaid, but the causes are special also, because of the climate and virgin soil in the west, in climate, soil and available resources the west is the best. Now from all these easterners, emigrating emi-grating westward, Utah has not secured se-cured her share Our population has not increased to such a great extent as has tho population of the coast states and the same reason holds" good here as above we have not advertised. ad-vertised. Pacts like the above show the necessity ne-cessity for combined boosting and , personal boosting will do more than several tons of railroad literature, gotten up in bombastic style. We haie vast natural resources and much private wealth. We have many people who own no property but very few who can be called poor or dependent de-pendent and Ogden has no tenement houses or tonement districts. We can offer a great range of products at a maximum of production and a minimum mini-mum of cost. We ask for farmers because towns stagnate without the development of the country. Farming Is one Industry that all others depend on. It Is what has been called "tho bottom industry," tho basis of society. so-ciety. It is not an Incidental calling but a business of millions, and a business busi-ness that is coming to have a broader broad-er outlook, and to face greater possibilities possi-bilities than ever before. There is a strong tondency country-ward and we must reach out to get those peo. pie who are turning toward the farm. We must boost as never before. By bringing more people to the city and county, we will be doing them a favor by showing them uncqualed opportunities oppor-tunities and ourselves a faor be-causo be-causo more people mean more customers custo-mers for our clothing, shoe, drygoods and other stores. And greater general gen-eral prosperity. I BADGER COAL & LUMBER CO. "True economy is not so much in what you I pay for what you get, as what you get, for what you pay."
