Show MOW TO TEACH CHILDREN ENGLISH With a full attendance, the first Saturday morning meeting of the citv school teachers was held this morning beginning at S;40 o'clock Tho meeting meet-ing was called to order in tho large assembly hall of the Ogden High school Professor H. R. Drlggs, of the Uni-ivursitv Uni-ivursitv of Utah, was the lecturer this I morning. He took for his subject, , "Tho proper interpretation of English literature with the view to the teaching teach-ing of It to children." In IiIb talk he said that to arouse the interest of children in a selection, the background back-ground aud the events leading up lo the writing of the subject should be made which were the causes of the .writing of "The Star Spangled Banner," Ban-ner," ho said, the children would feel a giealer interest In the song and they would give more attention to tho meaning of the poem. He explained how interest could be secured In the reading of selections from "The Lady of tho Lake" and detailed lie events leading up to the writing of the poem, "Lead, Kindly Light." To express what he wished to impress im-press upon the minds of tho teachers, he quoted the short phrase, "Preach leas and seo more." His talk waB an Interesting one and was closely followed by the teachers. At 9:3Q, the teachers assembled in different roomB for their departmental work. These departments wore pro-Bided pro-Bided over by the supervisors of grade wok, music, art. penmanship, hygiene, and physical education The department depart-ment work took up the remainder of the morning. |
