Show M'KINLEY WAS SHOT IN THE - ABDOMEN President McKlnle was shot twice. The first bullet struck the third rib and glanced off. The second bullet entered tho abdomen five Inches below the loft nlpplo and one and one-half inches to the leTt of the median line and lodged near the pancreas. It had passed through all the tissues and had penetrated the ytomach in two places, front and back. There wao some hemorrhage. An operation was performed Immediately, Imme-diately, but tho bullot was not found, nor was it found In the post mortem exainlatlon Gangrene foilowcd the wounds in the stomach and this was tho Immediate cause of death. McKlnley Lived Eight Days. President McKlnley was shot September Sep-tember G, 1901, in the music hall at tho Buffalo exposition. He died at 2:15 o'clock the morning of September M. Tho wound which killed President Garfield was quite similar to thnt which killed President McKinley, hut antiseptic and aseptic surgery were In their infancy then and public opinion was opposed to operations which probably would have saved the president's presi-dent's life. The bullet entered on the risht side,- fracturing the elevontii rib. it was deflected to tho left, broke the body of the vertebra and lodged neai the pancreas. The bullet did not enter en-ter the peritoneal cayity and it was said by medical men, that the prea-dent's prea-dent's chances wore as good without an operation as with one. In fact, it is assorted that death was directly the result of the probing for tho bullet.
