Browning as chief of police received re-ceived publicity yesterday In the form of a well-founded rumor to the effect that tho present head of the police department is slated for an office, the duties of which aro said to be goneial overseer or inspector of all departments. depart-ments. The city commissioners could not bo induced to discuss the prospective appointment of the present police chief but they did not deny that such an office was about to be established. The title of the office and the salary hae not been made public but the full details of the now office may be made public when the commissioners tako official action on the police chief's resignation at tho meeting this evening. It is understood that the new office will carry a higher salary than that drawn by Mr. Browning in his present pres-ent capacity The duties of tho man appointed will not be confined to the police department or to any other one department but he1 will be the Inspector In-spector In all departments and will be first assistant to the city commissioners commission-ers or an ex-officlo member of tho commission. |
