Show WILLIE RITCHIE IS VERY CLEVER BOXER Pittsburg, Jan. 29. When Willie, Ritchie won the popular decision over' Harry Trendall, the St. Louis lightweight, light-weight, aftr six rounds of hard fighting fight-ing here last night, the crowd saw a good mill. Ritchie proved the cleverer clever-er man and piled up a good lead, with pretty left hand jabs and right crosses. He had all the bettor of the clean work Trendall being moro effective ef-fective In the clinches than when standing off. A crowd of 2000 fanB jammed into the American Athletic club and all went away satisfied, as both boys tried hard all tho time. None disputed dis-puted the right of Ritchie to the decision. de-cision. Ritchie was handled by Emil Tnlry nnd Pnckey McFarlaud, his stable mate. Packey got a big hand when introduced. The encounter was a fierce one. though there was no knockdowns. Trendall showed an Inclination to close work and kept in an ambraco 1 as much as possible, but Ritchie smothered most of his short-arm blows and managed to keep hlb boxing box-ing enough to ea'rn the verdict. Trendall could not get away from Ritchie's laft hand Jab and whenever ho became tired of taking spiteful stabs in the face, he rushed Into a clinch. Once there he managed to use his right with good effect at times, but Ritchie's defense was too good for him. When they sparred, Trendall's right hand was useless, Hg apparently forgot for-got he possessed a useful punching weapon until he reached a clinch. That gave Ritchie a big advantage, as he soon learned to ignore Harry's right while feinting for openings. Each round was practically a repe-tion repe-tion of the others. Ritchie scored well In all the clean work and piled up a steady lead. Trendall's best round was the llft.li, when he landed some hard ones to Ritchie's jaw, but the rally did not last long and Willie was soon pecking at his face again, oo |
