Show WSMMETS WEAKNESS SHOWN IN "- -THE STOCK MARKET- Now York, Jan. 29. The activity and weakness of the slock market during the morning indicated that the force of the selling movement which set in late last week had not spent itself. There wore a few points of strength in the list and efforts to bid up New York Central, Reading and Lehigh Valley met with success at times, but the undertone was consistently con-sistently weak. The feeling of bear-ishness bear-ishness was emphasized by prophecies that the quarterly statement of the United States Steel corporation, to be Issued tomorrow, would be unfavorable. unfa-vorable. Heavy professional selling was resumed re-sumed and the majoi portion of the list sold well below the previous low level before the decline was checked. United States Steel went down to 63! Bull operators pushed up individual stocks and New York Central sold 2 points above Saturday's closing, Read, lng 1 n-8 and Lehigh Valley 1. Rallies Ral-lies in United States Steel, St. Paul and the Hill and Harrlman stocks reached a point or more and the whole market was much Improved in character at noon Bonds wero Irregular. Traders found little encouragement to do business In the afternoon. The oarly material declines and subsequent subse-quent sharp rallies apparently completed com-pleted the large speculative operations opera-tions for the tunc being and the room was at a loss as to the market's immediate im-mediate action. Prices eased off slowly slow-ly on spasmodic selling, but slight recessions usually uncovored purchasing pur-chasing orders and the list consequently conse-quently alternated within a narrow range.
