Show EXECUTED Murderer Protests Innocence In-nocence in a Note to the Warden OBsinlng, N. Y., Jan. 29 Albert Woltqr vas put to death In the electric chair at Sing Sing prlBon at 5:41 o'clock this morning, for the murder of 15-year-old .Ruth Wheeler nearly two years ago. The girl came to Wolter's flat in New York In search of employment nnd Vio lHlln1 Vio,- nffnr aYin hnrl hoan mistreated. Wolter Jeft a statement with Warden Kennedy, denying that he had committed the crime. The execution wns without feature and Wolter was declared dead after one contact of 1,960 volts. The state electrician said that Wolter showed less reBlatanco to the electric current than any murderer put to death by electricity at Sing Slug prison. The murderer spent his last night quietly, resting only part of the time. At 2 o'clock this morning Wolter Wol-ter wrote his denial of the killing. It was on a single sheet and so even and clear wore the letters formed that tho writing had the appearance of copper cop-per plate. The statement reads: Declares His Innocence. "Warden J S. Kennedy: To be given giv-en to the public. January 29, 2 a. m.: "Now that I am departing from this world to go into the presence of God, I wish to make this last statement. The world refused mo justice, but our Father in heaven, who knows our innermost in-nermost thought, He will give me pure and undefiled justice I wish to state I am innocent of the crime of whicli I was convicted. 1 have been a victim vic-tim of circumstantial evidence. 1 hope thero "may come a time when the conscience con-science of the perpetrator will overr power and will compel him to come to the front and acknowledge the crime. It Is my honest prayer to God that He may bring tho person guilty of this crime to justice, that my name may be cloarod of this stain and that the people may see the Injustice done me, and that they killed an Innocent boy. History of Crime. Ruth Wheeler met her death on March 24, 1910, In Wolter's apartment on the fourth floor of a house on East Seventy-fifth street, New York City, where she had gone to seek employment employ-ment as a stenographer Her charred body was subsequently discovered The evidence Indicated that the girl had come to her death by strangulation strangula-tion and burning, after having been ravished. Tho body had been thrust into a fireplace, where it was parti burnod and concealed until it became convenient to remove it in a bag to the fire escape from which it was thrown to tho ground below. Wolter admitted that ho wrote a postal card which led Ruth Wheeler to visit his apartment and in a book kept by him was found In her writing an entry of her name and address A hatpin nnd a ring which the girl had worn on the morning of her disappearance were found In the fireplace and In a house to which Wolter had moved on the following fol-lowing day was found an umbrella which the girl was said to hae had with her when sho left home. No one could be found to testify to the existence exis-tence of Aftner. Wolter was sentenced to be electrocuted elec-trocuted on June 16, 1911, but the execution ex-ecution was stayed by an appeal. Although Al-though the law allows but six mouths In which to argue an ap'peal, the case did not reach the court of appeals until un-til December -I, 1911. Tho court affirmed af-firmed the judgment of conviction within ten days. - |
