It is becoming more patent to every one that Ogden Is destined to be ono of tho large cities of the west. Judging Judg-ing by the past the Chamber of Com-1 merce is to bo ono of tho leading factors fac-tors In placing Ogden In the position to which it is logically entitled and belongs Thero have been manv subjects sub-jects placed before the Chamber of Commerce this year for their consideration, con-sideration, but owing to tho conditions only a fow of tho many have been considered. Advertising. Utah, and Ogden in particular, has had less judicious and effectivo advertising ad-vertising than any other point in tho United States, as a consequence, cltv property in Ogden Is fifty per cent cheaper than any other city ot like slzo and opportunities in tho west Farming and fruit lands In adjacent states no so well located and not no favorably situated to the market bring from two to three times as much as they do near and adjacent to Ogdon. Several of the leading advertisers aro beginning o appreciate this fact and tho varlouB railroads centering in Ogden have appropriated large Bums ot money for the purpose of advertising during tho year of 1912 The Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce, during the torm of ray office has put out about thirty thousand pieces of advertising mat- tcr which Is showing good rcsulU by the Increase in tho number of Inquires Inquir-es made dally. v Telephones. When tho present board of directors and officers were Instaliea, upon uiot -ugh 'Investigation it was determined that wo were under a needless and unnecessary expense of about $72,000 -0 per annum In having a duplication of the telephono system with a doublo tax and toll on same when the entire Hervlco was owned by ono company , While it necessitated considerable time and energy and'expenso to take UP a fight of this kind. It was thought by the board that $12,000.00 per year, especially when It was a needless expense, ex-pense, was worth saving and a com-mltteo com-mltteo v,'rs appointed to effect the elimination of one of tho lines or tho consolidation of tho two, the matter was settled by the consolidation of the two lines. Chautauqua. It Is apparent to every one that Utah Is the logical coming summer resort of the nation, in order to bring this fact prominently betoro tho state ami nation It was decided to give a Chautauqua Chau-tauqua and for ton days somo of the great men of tho nation brought thoir messages to the many people who attended attend-ed An association has been formed and incorporated which guarantees the yearly repetition of this delightful educational institution, thus leaving the Chamber of Commerco to expend Its activities along other lines. In 1912 a stronger program will bo givon from July 19 to 29. the groat celebration celebra-tion of Pioneer Day, July 21 will bo a unique and meritorious eonL Ogden Is a logical and natural sum-mor sum-mor resort, owing to Its Incomparable climate and wonderful Kconlr. attrac tions and the easy accessibility to the canyons and other resorts In" the vicinity, vi-cinity, which placos this city In tho ranks of tho coming vacation polntB. Boulevards. Owing to the scenic attractions In and around Ogdon and the fact that Ogden Is on tho transcontinental highway high-way of the nation, It was thought advisable ad-visable In order to cater to the tram-continental tram-continental automobile touring, which within a few years is destined to be a very large ractor In the tourist business, busi-ness, the Chamber of Commerce appointed ap-pointed a committee with tho power to act, to build ono of the most comprehensive com-prehensive BystemB of boulevards in the country, "the system will include a complete net-work of tho city, a complete line into ttie fruit growing districts, taking in the Groat Salt Lake the sugar factories, canning factories and tho Hot Springs sanitarium, the mountain Bystom will Include Ogden Canyon sanitarium, tho Hermitage. Idlowlld, North Ogdon Canyon, Weber We-ber canyon with tho Utah Light and Power company plant, which cost over a million and a half dollars, and the Weber canyon power plant, which cost almost as" much. Some of the maps have already been gotton up and a Ave year campaign Is well under way for the building and beautifying this comprehensive boulevard system. Recommendations. Thero are a number of Important matters which require the attention of tho Chamber of Commerco for thl3 year and which It will be well as soon as the Incoming board is organized for the now officers to take up and push to a successful Isbuo, a few of these aro: Railroads. Tho contour of tho country Is such that Ogden Is and always will be tho railroad center of the Intormountaln rogion nnd while wo fully appreciate the railroads we have, yet owing to the fact that Ogden Is the conter of a vast undeveloped empire which Is Just beginning to be developed, this development would bo very much accelerated ac-celerated had wo two or three moro n tt r in ii ! in in i an ii - railroads centering In Ogden, as those roads which aro now here, owing to their other interests find it impossible impossi-ble to give their attention to tho de-elopments de-elopments of the resources tributary to Ogden, which resources demand two or threo more railroads in Ogden, each would develop as much buslncas as tho roads which aro now hore and the Chamber of Commorce should tako up an actlvo campaign looking to the construction of additional railroad fa-cillties. fa-cillties. Public Market. Ogden is proud of tho fact that It is a homo city, that It possesses nil the attractions and adantages necessary nec-essary for people who desire homes to Ue pleasantly and economically, but owing to tho fact that at the present time, according to the United States reports tho farmer and producer pro-ducer of tho necessities of life onl.v get 4C per cent of the ultimate consumption con-sumption price, thero should bo a public mnrkot established in Ogdon so that we can offer as an Inducement Induce-ment for pooplc to locato and come and live amongst us, a cheap living, which can be very much reduced by having a public market as most progressive pro-gressive cities now havo, tho Chamber Cham-ber of Commorce stands for a larger and greater Ogden and for a public market. Universities or Country Club. During 1911 It becamo apparent to the Chambor of Commerce that there was a demand for the organization of a University or Country club In Ogden, where every one with a taste for that kind of entertainment could engage In diversified athletic amusements, but, up mature Investigation Inves-tigation It was decided to give the Chautauqua association the entire field and wait until a later day to organ-lzo organ-lzo tho University or Country club, but now that the Chautauqua la well established It is an opportune time to organize such a club at tho oarllost possible date. , The Chamber of' Commerco Is In better condition now to fill Its sphore of usefulness than over beforo, the membership Is moro united In their desire to build a greater Ogdon than at any tlmo In the past, thoro Is a good cash balance In tho treasury and BgaMgrcaae i, i ii; jjjuh,,, ii'.i.h i i ii hi overy ono feols tho necessity of aa- . sumlng the duties which havo como mM to us in helping to build a Greater m Ogden fl |
