Show H HIGH PRICE OF COAL. 1 With the end of summer, the period, of little or no coal con- H Brimption, the price of coal is being boosted. The responsibility H for the inflicting of this heavy burden on the families of Ogden is l charged against the mine owners. The coal dealer says the mine H owner is the guilty one; the miner points to the railroad; and the H railroad enters a. denial. And there you areno one to blame 1 H But some one is responsible for these liigh prices and should H te held accountable before the bar of public opinion. H Utah, is one of the great coal-producing states of the union. H Inexhaustible bodies of coal are found within 200 miles of Ogden, B aud yet the people of this city arc called on to pay $5.75 a ton fori t the fuel. The coal placed on the market often is filled" in with H slate and dirt, so that the price is over $6.00 a ton for clean coal. H' While the legislature was in session last winter, the coal peo- M pie dropped the price of fuel to the figures at which it has been sold H since. Now with winter coming on, and with no fear of legislative H action, the coal peoplo are fixing the price at almost prohibitive H figures. They are making a mistake, for public sentiment will H crystalizo in a demand for a radical reduction in the margin of M profit made by mine, railroad 'and middleman, and, smarting under M the mistreatment, the public may go so far as to make unfair ex- H actions of those engaged in the coal business. Before the protest M becomes a popular uprising, the coal producers, carriers aud others H in the business should restore thd rates that have prevailed. |
