Eight were killed and fourteen injured when an excursion train and a regular passenger pas-senger train on the Bancor & Aroostook Aroos-took road collided at this station about 9 o'clock last night. Fivo passengers of the excursion train were killed. The dead: Engineer T. W. Gnrriclon of the excursion ex-cursion train. Two firemen, names unknown. Frank Feely. Harry Clark and Dr. H. Pikes, all of Presque Isle. Me. Clark Roomer of Washburne. Me. The regular train was the heavier and plowed Its way through the excursion excur-sion cars with little injury to tho regular regu-lar train. The accident is said to have ben duo to a misunderstanding of ordors. The trains were to havoNmet at Grindstone, Grind-stone, but the excursion train was about a minute late and the regular train di-1 not wait, it is said. In the smoking car of tho excursion train next to the tender wore tue members of the, Presque Isle band, nearly all of 'whom were killed or jured. Owing to the isolation of the place early details were hard to obtain. BANGOR, Me, July 2S Fifteen persons were reported killed in a head-on collision tonight between a crowded excursion train on the Bangor Ban-gor & Aroostook railroad and tho midnight train fronj Van Buren to Bangor. Thirty or forty persons are known to have been injured, and it is thought several others are beneath the wreckage. Confusion of Orders. WATERVILLE. Me., July 2S It is, reported here that two trains; mea head-on as a result of a confusion of orders and that the excursion train, was rupning on the time of the regular regu-lar passenger train. Tho smoking car of the excursion train, next to the engine, was telescoped by the tender. All the passengers in this car, nrost of whom were members of the Presque Isle band, are reported, killed or badly wounded. Engineer F. W. Garcelon of the excursion ex-cursion train was instantly killed. Engineer En-gineer William Orr of the regular train was badly hurt. Both firemen are missing. nn |
