Show oo BELLE LONDON AND PMEWMflE Salt Lake, July 29 Witnesses for the defense In the preliminary hearing hear-ing of Mrs. Dora B Tophom, also known as Belle London, charged with pandering, It being alleged that byy means of promises and threats and by divers devices' and schemes she caused and encouraged Mrs Dogney Gray to remain an inmate of a house in the west side stockade, testified yesterday morning and afternoon in the court of L. W. Harris, justice of the peace, Fourteenth South and State streets. E. A Rogers, attornej for the defense, said yesterday that the hearing would come to an end Monday, when those of his witnesses who have not testified will take the stand. The first witness yesterday morning morn-ing was Olivine Lamar, a resident of the district. Sle testified that on two occasions r e had seen Dogney Gray, who called herself Nellfe Whlto at that time, leae bouso No 140. She said that the first time the girl went away In a taxicab and that the second time she walked away unaccompanied unac-companied and that when she had left the Moore woman remained In I tho house I She testified that tho girl had often i repeated to her the statement that she would not go back home because her mother entertained an undeslra- i ble element in the hotel of which she was tho proprietor and also for tho ' reason that her mother treated hor cruelly The Lamar woman testified that one night Dogney Gray had seen her brother-in-law, a musician, and that she had said: "Don't let him see me, because he Is a relation of mine." Tho next witness was W. Y. Kim, a Korean. Dogney Gray had previously previous-ly testified that during the time she had been In the house a man had been stationed at the door who forbade her to go out of tho house Kim testified testi-fied that he had been In the house ' during tho time the girl was there J and that he had never laid his hands upon her or prevented her from leaving leav-ing the house. He said that the girl had left the house -a number of times. Rose Bartlett, a resident of the district, dis-trict, testified that she had entered Belle London's office while Mrs. Lof-strom Lof-strom was talking with Belle London, nnd that she had heard Mrs Lofstrora say to her daughter "When I get you homo I'll beat you to death." The , Bartlett woman 'testified that she had i been the bearer of the summons to j Dogney Gray telling her that her mother wished to see her and that after af-ter receiving the summons the girl had eaten her supper before going to . see her mother. Rose Bartlott testltied that Bhe had ' been in the office with Belle London when the lattor flrstX saw Dogney Gray and that the girl had told Belle London that she was 19 years old-and old-and that she was iu hor twentieth year. The witness testified that tho girl had told her the same thing on a number of occasions and also that 'the girl had told -her that she had made money "uptown" and with it had purchased Dnerles. N. S. Matthews, a piano player, tcs- titled that Mrs Helen Lofstrom had told him last Tuesday that the county attorney and the sheriff had told her If she did not do her best to got Belle London they would make trouble for her rooming house. The piano player also testified that on Saturday, May 13, Mrs. Lofstrom had told him that Belle London had telephoned to her to come and get her daughter. |
