Show '(TRY 10 PASS GUM In an effort to supply their less fortunate fellows with somo of the luxuries of life, four men were cav . tured last night while in the act of I smuggling a quantity of tobacco and chewing gum into the city jail. They gave tliolr namos aa James and Ne'l Ryan, Walter Ray and Frank Wilson. The quartette was apprehended by Detoctive Chas PIncock and George l Wardlaw, Desk Sergeant Robert j Payne and Special Officer John Lamport. Lam-port. Officer Lampert was on special duty and sUt,oned inside the jail proper when shortly before midnight he discovered the prisoners engaged i:i dragging objects across the space which Intervenes between the outside wall and cago by the aid of a broom v. hich had been left inside the cage. These boxes, the officer discovered, were shoved In on the Jail floor through an opening at the corner of the building and through which the water runs when the jail is scrubbed Stealing cautiously from the Jai). Officer Lampert informed the other officers of what was taking place and. leaving the building by (the front door, they ran around tho building and took tho four men by surprise, placing all ' under arrest It was found that the consignment of goods which had been smuggled into the Jail consisted of two boxes of cigars, eight small boxes box-es of chewing tobacco and a large box of chewing gum. It is very evident that the goods were stolen. Neil Ryan was released from the city jail but a few days ago after serving for drunkenness Wilson is ar old offender and has been under arrest many times in the past few years. v nn |
