Show M TO DOUBLE TRACK IMMEDIATELY. 1 Robert S. Lovett and Julius Kruttschnitt are to arrive in Og- H den some time soon, on their long trip of inspection over the Harri- B man railroads. They are conferring with their lieutenants as to the H expenditure of millions in improvement work, the most important H part of which is the double tracking of the Union Pacific and South- M em Pacific from Omaha to Ogden and from Ogden to San Fran- H There has been some doubt expressed as to the real intent of B these high officials. The declared purpose to double track has been H accepted in some quarters as an empty promise, but Judge Lovett M answers this skepticism by saying that the roads are not only to be H double tracked, but the work will start immediately. H Judge Lovett takes a reasonable view of the Interstate Com- H, ' merce commission decision, refusing to grant higher railroad rates. M "I was, at first, afraid' he said, "that the decision would H ' ' arouse considerable apprehension among investors, but I now believe H ' I 'itto be only &n incident among the many incidents of railroad prob. H lems and railroad management. Lawsuits are both lost and won H j 'and railroads have their share of both losses and victories. I do m j not believe it will have any effect on our plans and that every H , project we have initiated or have in contemplation will be carried H , through as though no such decision had been made. Of course, if H ! a series of hostile decisions should be handed down, their very cum- M . ulativeness might have a bad result, but I have faith in the business H j sense of this nation and it seems to me that the good business judg- H 'xnent of the country at large will require fair treatment and protec- K c , tion for railroad investments as much as for any other, kind of invest- H f ( ' That is a statement which will appeal to ail clasies as-fair and' sensible. Unlike his eastern associates, Judge Lovett is not storming storm-ing and predicting dire calamity, because his side has not won before be-fore a court authorized to weigh both sides of the rate question. He is accepting the ruling with resignation and proceeding to build up the country to the best of his ability. It is patriotic, it is business, it is good common sense. |
