Show HOME RULE. The Home Rule bill was passed by the House on a vote of 164 yeas to 41 nays, receiving the entire democratic support. This is good news indeed, and has caused a feeling of joy in the breasts of all who have the interests of Utah at heart. While we would have preferred statehood, we cannot help but rejoice at the passage of the home rule bill, for we believe it to be a gigantic stride in that direction. The passage of this bill means that the people of Utah wilj at last have a chance to prove to the world that they are a sincere and honest people; it also means death to that useless use-less body of salary grabbers, the Utah commission. It will, of course, slightly increase the expenses of the territory' But who would not be willing to pay double taxes, if necessary, to have the glorious privilege ot electing a governor from among our citizens, thm keeping cut such a derogatory executive as "pee-wee." However we must not crow too loud, for the bill has yet to pass the Senate and be signed by the president before becoming a law, Being a democratic measure, its chances in the republican Senate are not as favorable as they were in the House. Still itis possible that the republtcan Senate may go the democratic demo-cratic House one better and introduce a bill providing for statehood for Utah, and it is to be hoped they will. |
