Show FOOD CONTROL LAW PASSES The food control bills which provide pro-vide for appropriations to stimulate production and which also provide for a food survey to ascertain the available food Bupply of the United States, passed both houses of congress con-gress and will become law today when President Wilson affixes his signature. Prompt appointment of "Herbert Hoover as food administrator and immediate operation under the legislation legis-lation Is expected to follow. In addition to its comprehensive provisions for control of food, fuel, "fertilizer and farm equipment, the control bill carries drastic prohibition prohibi-tion features. Thirty days after it is approved it will be unlawful to use foodstuffs in the manufacture of distilled dis-tilled beverages or to import distilled distill-ed spirits for beverage purposes; and the President will be empowered to commandeer for military purposes distilled liquors now held in bond and to regulate or restrict the use of foods in the manufacture of wine and beer. The final vote in the Senate was secured by unanimous agreement to dispose of the bill today and after four days' discussion of the conference confer-ence report. It Is predicted that as a result of this legislation giving the President such powers the nation will become "bone dry" within a short time. |
