Show SOUTHERN COUNTIES TO SEEK SHARE OF NEW RELIEF FUNDS South State Group Asks For Modification of State Contract Law A meeting called by the civic clubs of southern Utah, was held at Richfield Rich-field Monday. Beaver county was represented re-presented by Geo. Jefferson and James Patterson, of Milford and Wm. A. Miller, J. F. Tolton and H. D. Thompson of Beaver. A request for a representation in the apportioning of any funds which may become available for relief work in this state by reason of federal legislation leg-islation is expected to result from action taken at the meeting-. Nine of 12 southern Utah counties were represented by officials or by proxy at the meeting. Commissioners Commission-ers present passed several resolutions resolu-tions bearing- on the relief participation participa-tion desired, and further action was promised as measures become needed. need-ed. That actual relief might be made more readily available to the interested inter-ested counties in the matter of road construction and betterment work, a resolution, addressed to Governor George H. Dem, was adopted asking that he incorporate in his message to a special legislature, if it be called, call-ed, a request for the repeal of that section of the state law which makes mak-es mandatory that the road commission commis-sion let contracts on all road work which totals more than $5000 per unit. The resolution asks for a law to allow road work to be paid for under the force account system, rather than by contract, to relieve unemployment among citizens of southern Utah counties,- Comments upon the resolution indicated in-dicated that the assembled commissioners commis-sioners were aware of the efforts toward to-ward cooperation being made by the state road commission office under the present law. Despite the utmost leniency of interpretation of the present pre-sent laws, it was felt, the fullest benefit could not be derived from road programs at present without a change of law. Pending the action of congress upon up-on the various relief measures now before the house and senate and in joint committees, the group of southern south-ern Utah county commissioners obligated obli-gated themselves to list with the secretary sec-retary of the Associated Civic Clubs of Southern Utah any and all feasible feas-ible projects arising within their respective re-spective counties which might come under the terms of the prospective federal aid. In a definite proposal relative to the federal aid road fund, which is likely to make available nearly $2,-000,000 $2,-000,000 for highway construction in Utah under the terms of the Wagner-Garner bill, the commissioners asked "that each county or county commission submit to the proper source a given road project within its county, and ask that sufficient funds be made available to complete said project in full, or as much of such projects as available means will cover." In rview of the inadequacy of the information available regarding the bills and measures in question, it was further resolved that in the event of a special session of the state legislature legisla-ture being called, a meeting of county coun-ty commissioners from southern Utah counties be called in Richfield at least seven days prior to the opening op-ening date of the legislature, to consider con-sider the method of distribution and apportionment of funds which might be made available by such session of the legislature. |
