Show War Fund Drivo Get Underway; Good Success List in Delta is Headed By a 50 Donation Throughout Utah, the annua! campaign of the United War Fund of Utah got into full swing Tuesday Tues-day of this week. The army of workers enlist eiUI'or this annual effort on behalf of the fund, which renresonls in this state 22 agencies affiliated with the National Na-tional War Fund, Inc., will canvass everyone in every community and rural district. The goal this year is $405,000, alloted to this stale as its share of the Xationaly War Fund budget. In addition to the regular eounty set-ups of chairmen, treasurers and assistants with workers. I lie three major labor organizations of this state- the AFL, CIO and United Mine Workers have complete canvassing groups in the field, wherever industrial plants are located. lo-cated. Since last year, when eighteen homefront. batllefront and foreign for-eign relief agencies were grouped under the National War Fund, four new ones have been added Philippine Phil-ippine War Relief, American Relief for Italy, United Lithuanian Relief Fund of America and the American Ameri-can Field Service. While purposes of the three agencies are obvious, there's a word to be said for American Amer-ican Field Service. This volunteer civilian outfit, financed as to e-quipment e-quipment wholly by War Fund donations, do-nations, serves right on the battle line, suppplementing with ambulance ambul-ance and first aid work the work of the army medical corps. Attached Attach-ed to contingents of the allies particulary those of France, Holland, Hol-land, Belgium, Greece, Poland and others- American Field Service takes practically the whole burden of evaculing wounded, since those gallant refugee armies have not the means of providing a regular medical corps. Many volunteeis of this service have been killed, captured cap-tured or wounded in action. Many have been decorated by Britain, France and the United States. So, a large part of the single contribution asked to cover all .the War Fund agencies will go directly to saving lives of our own and allied al-lied soldiers through American Field Services; to saving lives and restoring the fortunes and homes of the people in our allied countries coun-tries through the foreign relief a-gencies; a-gencies; to Caring for needy refugees, refu-gees, orphaned and refugee child- m ren through related services. Of equal importance, the rund seeks generous support on behalf of the home-front projects-- USO, USO camp shows and hospital en-terainment en-terainment units- United Seamen Relief (earing for sailors of the merchant marine) and the heart-touching heart-touching War Prisoners Aid, administrated ad-ministrated in enemy territory by the International YMCA. These, it is pointed out. by Herbert M. Schiller, Schil-ler, executive director of the United Unit-ed War Fund of Utah, are distinctly distinct-ly mornle-huilding and morale-suslaining morale-suslaining effor.s among the service ser-vice men and women who will carry car-ry on the actual warfare as well as the men who have done their part and are tin need of civilian aid. The drive locally got off to a flying start on Monday with $s.r) collected in three business houses. D. Stevens & Company headed the list with a don.ilion of $50. The dirve is expected to bo completed within a very short time with West Millard going over the op ;s usual. |
