Show Fire Hums Car As Travellers Halt On Desert Mr. and Mrs. Earl Willden and infant son, and Mr. and Mrs. Heber Wilkins were traveling to Los Angeles Ang-eles Saturday, when their trip was halted by fire. They planned to attend the funeral services of Mr. Wilinks' mother, Mrs. Mary Wilkins, former Deltan, who had died in Los Angeles. Mr. Willden was driving the party par-ty through in his new Oldsmobile, and stopped at Glendale, about 50 miles this side of Las Vegas to buy gas. As the attendant was filling the tank, Earl got out to stretch his legs, and walked to the back of the car. To his consternation, he could see flames shooting from underneath un-derneath the car at the back.Shoot ing fire, he first got the family out of the car, and then tried to save the car. There was no fire extinguisher at the station, no dirt close to throw on the fire, and what little was thrown on it did no good The best they could do was pull the car away from the station and . gas pump, and stand by and watch wat-ch it burn up. Their bags were all in the car, and everything was consumed in the flames, a total loss of car and clothes. Earl says he left Delta driving a new car, and returned 26 hrs. later with only one shirt to his back. The accident occurred about 11 a. m., Saturday, and he says it was then 107 above in the shade and no shade. The travellers separated there, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins took a bus on to Los Angeles. Earl and his wife and baby took a bus that evening, and returned to Cedar City for overnight. The next day was Sunday, and no stores open to shop in, so they came on by bus wearing the same clothing .In Fillmore Fill-more they chanced to meet Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Leavitt, and returned return-ed to Detla in their car. What caused the fire was not de termined. The car was insured. |
