I r The Southern Utah State College Thunderbirds walked off with a pair of first place trophies in the Annual Color Country Basketball tournament held Friday and Saturday. The T-Birds captured both the men's and women's v division championships. SUSC men were virtually uncontested in the tournament tour-nament as they dumped Claremont-Mudd 100 to 60 in the opener and disposed of Cal-Lutheran 106-76 for the tournament championship. In the women's division the T-Bird ladies had a little tougher time but breezed to the championship rather convincingly. They downed Dixie in the opener by a score of 91-64 then tangled with Snow College for the championship, winning 71-60. 71-60. Although the lady T-Birds jumped out to an early lead they never really broke away from the visitors from Snow College. -SUSC controlled con-trolled the tempo of the first half and held a 36-24 advantage ad-vantage at the intermission. Snow came out in the second half and narrowed the margin to within four twice during the period but the T-Birds T-Birds were able to build up the margin and went on to win by 11. He had a total of 41 points picking up 26 against Claremont and 15 against Cal Lutheran. He also lead all players in assists with a total of 15. In addition he grabbed off 22 rebounds. Also named to the All-Tournament All-Tournament team were . Butch Douglas and Ron Harrell. Douglas was the tournaments leading rebounder with 28, he also scored 32 points with a high of 21 against Cal Lutheran. Harrell, from his guard position, directs the SUSC offensive attack. Others named to the All-Tournament All-Tournament team were Jim Shasky of Claremont-Mudd; Mike Eubanks of Cal Lutheran and Tom Cody of United States International University. Eubanks of Cal Lutheran was the leading scorer in the tournament with 45. He hit for 21 against the T-Birds in a losing effort, but connected for 24 against USIU in the opening round. He also took down 15 rebounds against ! USIU. Cody connected for 24 points hitting 11 of 13 attempts at-tempts from the field and 6-7 from the foul line to keep USIU in contention in the consolation game against Claremont-Mudd. Cody had 15 points in the opening round action in which USIU lost to Cal lutheran. Shasky of Claremont-Mudd Claremont-Mudd was held to just 6 points against the T-Birds in the opening round game but came up with 24 points in WOMEN GARNER TOURNEY HONORS. Leading rebounder for SUSC was Chris Tea with 16. SUSC controlled the boards with 49 compared to 44 for Snow. Leading scorer Hill with 15. " Stacy King and Rose Marie Bench each had 15 and Ann Stott was in double figures with 10. In the women's division SUSC dominated the opening round against Dixie as they scored a 91-64 victory. Susan Peterson was the top scorer of the game with 38 points in the contest on 18 of 25 from the field and 2 of 3 from the foul line. She also hauled in 13 rebounds. Also in double figures was Dent Hendrix with 11. For Dixie Ilene Spilsbury was the top scorer with 31 points and she also had 20 rebounds. SUSC hit 47.1 percent from the field compared to 32 percent for Dixie. In the championship game SUSC was led by Hendrix with 20 points. Also in double |
