Show HansChamberlain reviews service as Cou nty Attqmey "I've enjoyed the job and I hope that I've done a good job for the county," said former County Attorney Hans Chamberlain. Chamberlain did not seek reelection in Nov. to the job which he has held since late 1970. Chamberlain felt that his biggest contributions to the county in terms of criminal cases were the convictions won in the Lawrence Leroy Alexander homicide trial in 1976, the Mac Durrand homicide trial in 1977 and the Lynn B. Calahan embezzlement em-bezzlement trial in 1978. Lawrence Leroy Alexander while 15 at the tinjeof the. homicide was convicted as an adult. The Mac Durrand case was the only homicide which took place in Cedar City during Chamberlain's term of office and for "about the last 15 years in Cedar City. Chamberlain also received a conviction in the embezzlement em-bezzlement case which proved that the deputy county assessor took $11,300 in county funds. This was one of the few embezzlement cases in the area in recent years. In civil cases he cited the lease contract with In-termoutain In-termoutain Health Care to run the Valley View Medical Center and setting up the service district in the valley and contracts with D & 0 Sanitation. Chamberlain had investigated in-vestigated the hospital because of complaints and a $100,000 a year in the red financial record. His findings fin-dings convinced the county commissioners to start negotiations with IHC to manage the hospital. Chamberlain said that his decision to not continue as the County Attorney was because the job has gotten too big. He felt that he had to choose between private practice and full time county work.... He said that , the County Attorney handles all civil and criminal cases for the county, acts as the legal advisor to all county departments, prosecutes all misdemeanors, juvenile court cases, and all felony charges in the county, and represents the five law enforcement agencies in the county. Upon Chamberlain's recommendation, James Shumate, the new County Attorney will be employed full time by the county.
