Show LaVerkin Landfill unauthorized; site changed A landfill visible from Highway 15, a much-used route to Zion National Park, is being eliminated by the Bureau of Land Management in response to public demands, Frank Rowley, BLM Dixie Resource Manager said this week. Clean-up and restoration of the "unauthorized" LaVerkin dump site, in Washington County about two and one half miles northeast of LaVerkin, began June 9, Rowley said. Arrangements have been made for the community to use the Hurricane Dump as an alternative to the present site. Citizens are requested to refrain from use of the LaVerkin dump and to use the Hurrican dumpsite. Clark Lamb of Mt. Carmel Junction, was awarded the contract for. the resotration job which is to be completed within 30 days. Trash has been cleaned out of the deep wash and a culvert is being installed. Trash from the surrounding area will fill about 15 feet of the wash and will be covered with fill. Disturbed areas are to be reseeded with government-furnished government-furnished seed. The contract calls for moving of 3,000 yards of waste and covering with 1,000 yards of fill. . Rowley said, "I'm sure we will have fine cooperation from LaVerkin residents since it was at public request that BLM proceeded on the cleanup of the old, unauthorized dump." |
