Show CLAUDE'S f ommsmiA S by Claude Orton When the Parowan High School announced that it was going to produce the musical "Oliver", I felt it was quite an undertaking, from what I had heard about it. And then when the school published the cast, which included over 50 participating, par-ticipating, and with another twenty assisting in the production, pro-duction, I wondered if those in charge could get that many students and helpers to geth-er geth-er and do very much. But they did. Result was about the finest fin-est and most entertaining evening eve-ning I . have attended for a long time. So I will now take off my hat, to Reed Lynn Turner, Tur-ner, instructor at the school for the way the musical turned turn-ed out. What a job he did. The way he brought his cast and chorus on stage; the way he got that much music out of the group was a miracle mira-cle (and they enjoyed every minute of it); the use of the lights, the scenery and the way the scenery changes were made, was really something. Now regarding the main members of the large cast, I am going to let you who attended at-tended the presentation choose your favorite actor; If you didn't see it, it's useless for me to try and tell you what they done and how well they did it. Oh just one: Keith Lawrence, as Fagin. who presided pre-sided over the group called the workhouse boys and Fag-in's Fag-in's Thieves. He was as good as Lon Chaney of olden days, Boris Karloff of later vintage and Vincent Price of today. Let's just say his work was the best ever for the part he portrayed. Visited briefly last week at my mrchjne with Art Walunas and he let me in on some of the things coming up at Brian Head. He admitted , that the skiing season is practically over, that it was rather short, less than four months, but that that was the way it was. It was real good while it lasted, especially from the first of November, with a big Thanksgiving week, Christmas week and well into February. Febru-ary. We have to admit that "Old Mother Nature" is rather fickle. She does queer things. For instance, the 1970-71 season was also strange; remember. re-member. The resort people had hundreds of reservations for early in November; thousands thous-ands of dollars for the same for Thanksgiving. They had to be returned, no snow. The same held true through most of December, and it almost got to Christmas before the snow came, but it stayed and they were skiing up there until un-til almost May. See how it Is But Art states that they are going forward with planning for things to come there, with actual work to get underway just as soon as it dries up to where they can. On the boards are several more condominiums condomin-iums to augment the occom-modations occom-modations already there. Long range plans sends this construction con-struction program all the way around the head of Bear Flat. Running north, Mr. Van Sickle Sick-le has plans for the extension of his present chalet village, running up the ridge along along the west side of Bear Flat. Other property holders there are planning for expansion. expan-sion. The public facilities of the resort owners are also in for expansion, more ski trails, more lifts, and more services including eating, and store, laundry and car services. . That is just what I want to see happen at Brian Head, a resort for our area, that will bring in thousands of people from areas lying to the south of us, with their money to boost our economy to take the place of those things that are phasing out. You know our mining, livestock and farming farm-ing business is on the decline , especially the two first ones named. Things do not look too bright for their future, only under government subsidization. subsidiza-tion. Some of those things also al-so wear out, or are used up. Now that is different for recreation re-creation and tourism. They don't wear out, and with proper pro-per promotion will pet better. Under proier treatment they will get better each year, as more people, with money to spend ain more leisure tunc to travel, as is noted by the recent change in more long -holiday week ends, that give ". folks the opportunity to tra.'--vel longer distances - And, we are located right in the middle of it, if we play our cards right. Yes, we intimated in our last week's story of the do-ings do-ings of the Parowan Council, that it was felt that the pro-gross pro-gross of the work on the Holy, oak Lane road wasn't too good. Since then 1 have had an invitation from one of the farmers living on that road, to come down there and see what residents who live on that road are putting up with. From the way he described it I don't want to take my car down there. It i.s my opinion that all of those aspirants who are running for government office on the grounds that they are wanting to save the country-are country-are doing it to save it for themselves. An added thought, No matter who gets in, it will not be any better. |
