The Valley View Medical Center Pink Ladies held an Installation meeting last week with Mrs. Andrew Frandsen, outgoing president, in charge of the installation ceremonies. Officers for 1 9(58 were install-ed install-ed as follows: Mrs. Dili Frankhouser, president; pre-sident; Mrs. Fred Murray vice president and Advisory to the Candy Striper organization; Mrs. Jack Hayes, secretary; Mrs, John Atkins, treasurer. At the Installation meeting, Mrs. Frandsen presented 19 volumes of medical referenc? books to Mrs. Vurge Smith, Director of Nursing at the Val- J ley View Medical Center. The books are a gift to the hospital hos-pital on behalf of the Pink Lady organization. Volunteer work at the hospital hos-pital by women of Cedar City began in September, 1959 when a group of 13 ladies called call-ed the Iron County Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary began to devotr? several hours a week to hospital volunteer work. This group disbanded and reorganized re-organized several times. The Pink Lady Auxiliary as we know it today was organized organ-ized in September, 19(13, when Mrs. Smith, DIvctor of Nursing Nurs-ing and Mrs. Mark Robinson, Assistant Director of Nursing asked all Interested ladies in the community to meet with them. Twenty-one ladies responded re-sponded to their call and the group selected Mrs. Wilson Lunt as president. During the first year of organization the volunteers handled visitors, j worked with patients, and voted to open the snack bar as a service to both patients and visitors. The group also initiated the Candy Striper organization or-ganization in the Spring of 1964. Candy Stripers are teenage teen-age volunteers who give service ser-vice to the hospital. Their advisor ad-visor is the vice president of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary. The snack bar has been the only mealns of income for the Pink Ladies and profits from this project have been used in a number of ways. First of all, the Pink Ladies sponsor a scholarship for Candy Stripers who wish to further their education edu-cation in the medical field. In 10G8 the Pink Ladies gave a $100 scholarship to Miss Penny Pen-ny Jackson, who is studying . X-Ray technology and a $100 I scholarship to Miss Rosalie Grimshaw, who is studying nursing. Both girls had devoted devot-ed hundreds of hours of volunteer vol-unteer time and were carefully care-fully screened by the scholarship scholar-ship committee. The Pink Ladies al.' use their profits to buy gifts for the hospital. In the past they have contributed toys for the pediatrics ward; two rocking chairs - one for the nursery I and op.? for pediatrics; a hair dryer for the maternity solar- ! ium; thermometer shakers for the nurses; medical equip- ment for the nursery; and just recently th? Candy Stripers I donated an aquarium to the hospital. i In addition to thousands of j hours donated to patient care and to the handling of visitors , members have helped with j j laboratory work, the Red Cross i I Bloodmobile, Christmas decor ations, and monthly decorations decora-tions for patient's trays. Additional services include reading material and games for patients; a Hostess Cart which contains toilet articles patients might need.; a Polaroid Polar-oid camera to take pictures of newborn babies, and a Lost and Found Department. This past year nine Pink Ladies completed their Nurses Aaide Course and are now working at the hospital in that capacity. As with any volunteer group the Pink Ladies are always in need of new members. If any lady would like to devote between be-tween 2 to 3 hours per week to ! this type of volunteer work, she should feel free to call Mrs. Frandsen at 586-6652. Such services would be greatly great-ly appreciated. |
