Show Delta, Milford Tie for Northern Division Lead in Basketball Race at Halfway Point Milford team, led by Art Stewart, Stew-art, rolled out to a 63 to 58 win. The shorter Beavers were unable to cope with Stewart's height and he got loose for 30 points on ten field goals and ten for 13 tries from the foul line. Swindlehurst was high for Beaver with 21. This ended play for the first half of the season, with the second half to get under way this Friday. Delta will be at Parowan and Milford will be at Millard and the home teams should get the nod in these contests, although not' by much. And if they do the standings Saturday morning will find a four-way tie for first place Coach Elliot Jordan's crew should win on the home floor if they can get the Rabbits to REGION EIGHT Northern Division Delta 3 1 .750 Milford 3 1 .750 Parowan 2 2 .500 Millard 2 2 .500 Beaver 0 4 .000 The basketball ball race in the northern division of Region Re-gion 8, became tighter as the result of last week's games, with Delta losing to Millard and milford winning from Beaver to put the Rabbits and Tigers in a first place tie. By reason of its win the Millard team drew up into a tie for third place with the Parowan team, which had a bye, and Beaver dropped to the bottom of the standings with out a win. The Millard Win over the erstwhile leading Delta team was rather convincing but the margin came in the final period per-iod for the 58 to 48 victory. The winners were ahead at all rest periods, but by a narrow nar-row margin, until the final one when they rolled out to a ten point lead. It seems that Millard slowed Doug Bailey down a little and John Cooper Coop-er outscored him 18 to 17 and the rest of the Millard crew gave Cooper more of a hand than Bailey got from his teammates. J In the Beaver County tussle tus-sle the Beaver squad almost1 came up with its first win of the season and led 14-13 at the end of the first period, were ahead 30 to 29 at half-time half-time and 41-43 at the third quarter rest. Then the visiting run with them and come out of the slowdown game they won with at Delta a month ago. Delta has been plagued with the flu bug for the past two weeks, but the Rams are plagued with the mumps bug and may not be at full strength this week. In the Milford-Millard clash at Fillmore, the home floor and Millard's size might be able to stop Stewart, and if they can they should win. The Stewart boy has been getting up toward 50 of the Tiger's points all season and is hard to stop near the basket. It is interesting to note in the team standings statistics that the Parowan Rams, at the end of first half of play led in team scoring with 235 points in the four games. Millard had 230, Milford 226, Delta 218 and Beaver 217. Defensively, Defensive-ly, Delta was best, allowing her opponents 217 points. Par-wan Par-wan was next, allowing 214, Milford has given up 220, Millard Mil-lard 232, and Beaver 236. |
