Show Dr. Russell Peterson Attends Meeting At USU on International Biological Program Dr. Russell Anderson, associate assoc-iate professor in the College of Southern Utah School of Science, attended special meetings held at Utah State University Friday, Jan. 5 to discuss the role of the Utah Committee in the International Internation-al Biological Program. The United States has participated par-ticipated in the IBP for a number num-ber of years through the spon- sorship of the National Academy Acad-emy of Sciences and the National Na-tional Academy of Engineering. Engineer-ing. The IBP is similar in structure and purpose to the International Geophysical studies conducted throughout the world in the early 1960's. The program is set up so that individual scientists, national na-tional societies, or oheien-tific oheien-tific groups who wish to, participate par-ticipate in IBP can do so by submitting science proposals to granting agencies and filing fil-ing copies of the proposals with the National Research Council. Participants must first familiarize themselves with the nature, objectives, and general scope of the IBP. They must also establish the fact that their projects will benefit' through international cooperation. United States scientists are encouraged to review ongoing research in biology and determine deter-mine projects that would con-I con-I tribute to and benefit from inclusion in-clusion in the IBP. The IBP is not a granting agency and can only review and evaluate proposals pro-posals from the point of view of appropriateness for inclusion inclu-sion in the program. All Utah and Idaho colleges and universities will participate partici-pate in the IBP through a proposed pro-posed integrated study to be designated as a Desert Biome. Investigation is being conducted conduct-ed toward selection of a site for intensive study of the project. pro-ject. Dr. C. M. Gilmour, University Univer-sity of Utah biology department, depart-ment, is chairman of the Utah-Idaho Utah-Idaho study. |
