Show Military Service Laws Undergo Revision Sweeping changes In military service responsibility of young men of the nation have been announced an-nounced from Washington, D. C. this week, that may alter considerably consid-erably the activities of Selective Service in the months ahead. Most important of the changes cuts the two-year military service ser-vice requirement of draft-age men to six months of active duty. The new draft and reserve policy pol-icy announcement will effect possibly five million men in the military power pool. The new policy will become eliective on April 1, it is understood. The policy provides that youths Joining the Army National Nation-al Guard starting April 1, will be required to take six months active ac-tive duty training and remain in the guard four and a half years and in the standby reserve re-serve three years more. At present pre-sent guardsmen are not compelled com-pelled to take the six months training duty. Reserve duty requirements will be reduced to emphasize quality of combat readiness instead of quantity. Youths 17 to 18H years old who sign up for the six months training program that has been in effect for some time will have to serve only fof a half years In the ready r-rve, attending at-tending weekly drills and summer sum-mer camp, and three years In the standby reserve. At present the requiremen. is that they spend seven and a half years in tn& ready reserve. However, men already al-ready in the program will be fronted ths mHiv piVi!fj( those who Join after April 1 The army also offers the six months military duty option to draft age men under a Selective Service Administration ruling which Indefinitely , postpones from draft calls all men who have completed six months active ac-tive duty. Under this program the six months active duty option is opened op-ened to all draft age men 18 H through 25 years. However, In order to avail themselves of ihls option the registrants must volunteer vol-unteer before they are called to duty under regular Selective Service Ser-vice proceedurc. At present this option is available only to pre-draft pre-draft age men, 17 to 18 V4 years. |
