Show Larson Named to Head School Board At the meeting of the Board of Education of the Iron County School District held Monday, January 14, the first meeting of the current year, a new member of the board was seated and the board was re-organized with a new president and vice president named for the coming year. Leo Larson, who had served as vice- president during 1956. was elected president to succeed El-lcyd El-lcyd Marchant who ended his term on the board at the end of the year. He was replaced on the board by H. M. Endsley. Samuel Abott of Paragonah, a long-time member of the board, was named vice president to sue ceed Mr. Larson. The board spent some time during the meeting studying preliminary pre-liminary sketches of plans for a new South Elementary School In Cedar City, and authorized L. Robert Gardner, architect, to proceed pro-ceed with temporary plans for the structure. Before final plans are prepared, however, the board plans to visit a number of new and modern school buildings of the state In order that all the best features may be embodied In the new building in Cedar City. No Answer to Coll Bids for fencing an outside shop area at the Parowan High School had been called for. but when no bids were received the Superintendent was authorized to negotiate a contract for Installation Install-ation of the fence. The area to be enclosed Is adjacent to the mechanical arts department of th. school, and will provide protection pro-tection for machinery that must be left outside of the building. The board approved the employment em-ployment of UlDean Adams Norton Nor-ton as librarian for the Cedar Junior high school. She will fill a vacancy caused by the resignation resig-nation of Mrs. Joseph Flllerup. Some time was spent at the meeting In hearing a report on "Philosophy of Education" given by Pratt M. Bethers. Principal of the Cedar City High School. It was announced that the February meeting of the board would be held on the first Monday Mon-day of the month, Feb. 4, instead of the second Monday. The change is being made in order that the members of the board may attend the National School Loard Convention in Atlantic City on Feb. 14, 15, 16. The board, following its plan of visiting at least one of the schools of the district each month, will visit the Kanarra school In February, Superintendent Superintend-ent Ianthus Wright reports. |
