Show Little, Pony League Teams Defeated by Visitors from Pioche Cedar City Little Leaguers and the Cedar City Pony League All-stars All-stars suffered Identical 5 to 4 defeats at the hands of Pioche, Nev. in a series of post season games played Saturday evening in Cedar City. The games were arranged to give the Pioche Little and Pony League teams, not yet affiliated with the national program, opportunity op-portunity for outside competition. competi-tion. Both Little and Pony League in Pioche will make application to affiliate with the national or ganizations for the 1962 year, it was indicated. Cedar City Little Leaguers took a 4 to 1 lead over the visiting Pioche team going into the final inning of play. In the top half of the sixth, Pioche put together a series of hits to move out in front by a single run and tne Cedar City crew failed to score in the bottom half . On the mound through the early innings for Cedar was Gary Gulliford. He gave way to Boyd Mailman and Hallman was charged with the loss. Fred Esplin and Martin Skou-gaard Skou-gaard shared mound duties for the Cedar Pony League and although al-though only two hits were allowed allow-ed to the visitors, the Pioche crew took the one point victory. Cedar City collected four hits Including a triple by Robert Cor-ry Cor-ry and a double by Skougaard. Cedar scored first In the first inning when John Black walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk. It was in the fourth that Pioche Pi-oche took the lead with three runs on two hits both bunts and two of the runs scored on a bunt a ul interference play. P.-oche P.-oche pushed in two more runs In the fifth to take a five to one lead. In the bottom of the fifth Corry tripled and scored on a wild pitch and in the bottom of the seventh Inning, Skougaard started the Inning with a double, John Wade walked and a single by Black drove In one run and Wade came In to score for the final 5 to 4 score. Esplin collected 14 strikouts In five Innings of play and Skougaard Skou-gaard had five In the final two Innings of play lor a total of 19 for the game. Both the Little and Pony League teams will travel to Pioche Pi-oche for return games on Labor Day, Sept. 4. The Little Leaguers Leag-uers will square off at 5 p. m. followed by the contest between the two Pony League teams at 7:30p.m. |
