Show Light Voting Expected At Municipal Bond Election Taxpayers of Cedar Citl will determine in a special election Friday whether or not the city should purchase the Escalante Hotel property from the Utah Parks Company. Com-pany. The election is in the form of a bond election for $110,000 general obligation bonds, for the purchase of the property. The question was favorably decided on No. 5 in connection con-nection with the regular municipal election. However, the bonding firm has insisted that because the original ordi-nance ordi-nance calling for the election did not designate the use the city administration planned for the property, a new elec'ion would be necessary. In keeping with this request from the bonding bond-ing firm, a new ordinance has been passed and published and the second election scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24. I The new ordinance provides that the property is to be used for recreational purposes, addi-! tional city office space, and lor a future building site. That was the only material change in the ordinance, and the new election will provide $110,000 In bonds shall be issued for the purchase of the property for these specific purposes. Mayor Arnold E. Anderson and members of the city council emphasize em-phasize the fact that purchase of the property "for recreational purposes" does not mean that the present hotel building Is to be turned In'o a teen age canteen can-teen if the bonds are approved. Rather they in'erpret the "recreational "recrea-tional purposes" to be for banquets, ban-quets, dances, club and o'lier meetings, and conventions for which the building has been used for many years. Nor does it mean that teenage recreation purposes are excluded. Some po. tion of the building could be used for this purpose if the property prop-erty Is purchased and the admin-Istration admin-Istration decides such use would be advisable. The city administration has made no definite decision as to what portion of the building could or would be used for additional addi-tional office space. The mayor points out. however, that the city is In need of additional spate, and some portion of the hotel building could be used for thla purpose. As for a future building site, the city and county needs new facilities and the location of the property would be Ideal for these purposes It Is pointed out Mayor Anderson also calls attention at-tention to the fact that issuing the bonds will not necessitate an increase in taxes. Oher bonds have been paid off In the past few years, and the new obligation obliga-tion could be met without any tax Increase. Only two polling places will be set up Friday. Voters in the districts dis-tricts east of Main Street will vote in the City and County building, while voters on the wesf side of Main Street will vote at t!ie Cedar City High School. Piii win be open from 7 a. m. until 8 p. m. Only qualified voters who have paid a property tax in Cedar Ci-Ity Ci-Ity during the past year will be eligible to vo'e. |
