Show Lion Tamers Notch Out Victory in Second Half Plav I TEAM STANDINGS i LIONS 6 3 .66 COLUMBIA 4 4 .500 ELKS 4 5 .4 to SAFEWAY 3 5 .375 Lion Tamers repeated as charm pions of the Cedar City National Little League as they won the second half championship Monday Mon-day evening with a 13 to 5 win over Columbia. Coupled with the first half championship, the win gave them thre 1961 league title. Big winner of the week, how-ever, how-ever, was Safeway, the only team to record two victories. They defeated Lions 12 to 11 and Elks 19 to 11. Safeway 12. Lions 11 Safewayt trailing by a score of 11 to 4 goining into the bottom bot-tom of the final inning, pushed in eight runs to win this one the first win over the Lions for Safeway this season. The win came principally on the strength of 10 hits, eight of which came in the final inning. Scott Weaver Wea-ver homered for Safeway, Alfred Al-fred Smith tripled and Rex Mid-dleton Mid-dleton and Dale Hanslnk each doubled. Winning pitcher was Gary Gulliford. Losing pitcher was Brent Russell, the third pitcher pit-cher for Lions was the loser. Lions, in losing, had 15 hits including in-cluding three home runs, one each by Brent Russell, Glade Heyborne and Boyd Hallman. Columbia IS. Elks 12 Columbia picked up a win over Elks to stay in the running for the league race last week with a 15 to 12 win. Both teams - 4 were credited with eight hits but Columbia took advantage of walks. Winning pitcher was Dale Hatch and Allen Bratton suffered the loss. Ken Duerksen for Columbia Col-umbia and Steve Rollo for Elks finished on the mound for their teams. Big hitter of the day was Robert Smith of Elks with three home runs. Added to that was a home run by Ken Imlay, but was still not enough. Richard Gillies hit a grand slam home run for the winners and Hatch and Duerksen each doubled. Safeway 19, Elks 11 Safeway took advantage of walks to win in this contest as both teams were credited with Just seven hits. Rocky Moore was the winning pitcher and Ramon Ra-mon Banks was the loser. Banks had two doubles for the Elks for their only extra base hits and Alfred Smith and Lamont Middleton each tripled for the winning Safeway crew. .... Lions broke loose from a 5 to 4 lead in the fifth inning with three home runs, one taken away, to move out to a 13 to 4 lead and went on to win. This win was the clincher for the second half championship and the 1961 title. In the fifth, home runs were hit by Glade Hey-borne, Hey-borne, Bryan Wood and Boyd Hallman. Wood hit a home run in the second Inning and again in the fifth, but the one in the fifth was taken away when he failed to touch third base. Hallman Hall-man was the winning pitcher, holding Columbia to just five singles three by Richard Gillies. Elks 8. Lions 4 This was the final game of the season for these two clubs and Elks capitalized on errors in the field and walks to win. Elks collected only throe hits, including includ-ing a home run by Danny Webster, Web-ster, while Lions had five. A double dou-ble by Wade Roberts was the only extra base blow for Lions. Winning pitcher was Robert Smith with Paul Roberts suf feting fet-ing the loss. |
