Show Historical Society Receives Papers o! Elias Hicks Blackburn Journals, letters and other papers pa-pers of Elias Hicks Blackburn, a pioneer of 1849 who achieved a wide reputation In early day Utah as a healer, were addd recently to the collections of the Utah State Historical Society. Elias Hicks Blackburn was born In Pennsylvania on Sept. 17, 1827, and crossed the plains to Utah In 1849 in the William Hyde Company. He and his family settled first in Provo, where he became the town's first bishop. In 18G2 he moved to Miners-ville, Miners-ville, Beaver County, and later helped in the settlement of Wayne County. In 1880 he was appointed bishop of all the settlements set-tlements In Fremont Valley, and In 188D was ordained a patriarch of the Church, with Instructions to "travel and bless the people." He died on April 6, 1908. leaving many descendents in Utah, Ida-ho, Ida-ho, Colorado and California. Dr. Chadburn, as he came to be known, had no formal medical medi-cal education, but was in wide demand by the residents of the communities In which he lived to treat the sick and care for the injured. His Journal has many references to healings, which he attributed not so much to his own ministrations, as to Divine help. Joseph C. Blackburn, 4790 Wander Lane, Holladay, a son of the early pioneer, presented these valuable historic documents docu-ments to the Historical Society where the originals can be preserved. pre-served. They have been micro, filmed and thus made available to scholars, researchers and family fam-ily members for perusal and study. |
