Show Broncos Show Promise in Intia-Squad Play The College of Southern Utah football squad, which showed a lot of rugged, aggressive and spirited action in an intru-squad game Saturday evening before a handful of local fans, will open the 1957 season Saturday night at 8 against a strong club from Chaffey College of Ontario, Calif. The Bronco stadium should be popping with action Saturday night and sports fans will have an opportunity to see the Broncos Bron-cos against a strong California team. It is the first game of the season for both clubs, according to Coach Bruce Osborne. Saturday's intra-squad its me which saw the "Blues" defeat the "Whites" 13 to 6, although outgained by the Whites, gave promise of a strong club this season, one of the strongest in a number of years. In most positions Coach Osborne Os-borne is at least three deep and has four "Just Itching" to see action ac-tion in sorr spots, and Saturday It looked as if each was trying to prove hi3 point. Exceptionally outstanding was the blocking and tacking of both squads. At quarterback five men are working out, each with a lot of ' possibility. Duane Ford, Reno, looked good for the whites Saturday Sat-urday evening, but was having trouble with his passing. Bill Hayles, a lad from Lehi, also looked god for the Blues along with Dennis Hansen, American Fork. Rusty Dooughue, Moab, and Frank Pettengill, Reno, also worked at the spot and showed a lot of promise. Halfback slot Is one of the strongest positions fop the Broncos. Bron-cos. In Saturday's scrimmage . they showed a lot of speed, deception de-ception and drive. Catching most of the fans eyes was a young speedster, Duane Klamm, Paul, Idaho, and Kenneth Griener, Ce- dar City. The list can be extended to Include In-clude Vee Wadsworth, Milford; Ron Houser, Bountiful, and Sam McAllister, Kanab at left half, and Hyde Taylor, BY High; Larry Beck, American Fork, and Frank Walters, Kaysville, at right half. Fullbacks include Wendel Ileaton, Kanab; Tom Bird, Arnold Arn-old Page and Frank Baker. Here is a rundown on the linemen: line-men: At center will be Larry By-bee, By-bee, Ely, Nev.; Jim Porter, Delta; Floyd Jarvis, Rupert, Ida., and Jim Miller, Parowan. Ends will be Dwayne Colledge, Lehi; Rand Burr, Richfield, and Spencer Bry-ant, Bry-ant, Cedar City on the left side with Gaylen Lewis, Lehi, and Dick Eastlyn, Granite, on the right Tackles, another exceptionally excep-tionally strong position, will be Wendell Holmes , Cedar City; Hans Olson, Granite; Gayle Sim-kins, Sim-kins, and Don Liston, Provo, on the right side with Gary Middle-ton Middle-ton and Edrick Twltchell, Cedar City, and Charles Barnes ol Kaysville on the right. The guard position Is strong In personnel, but weak in depth. Coach Osborne Is even considering consider-ing moving some of his tackles to this spot to give the position necessary depth to make a strong aggregation. They include Dee Smith, Cedar City, and Tom Mc-Ginty. Mc-Ginty. Henderson, left guards, and Ray Maxfield, and Theron Johnson, both of Delta on the opposite side. Dee Smith suffered a slight shoulder injury in the intra-squad intra-squad contest Saturday and may not be ready for Saturday's opener, open-er, Osborne indicated. Saturday's contest will defin-itely defin-itely give a more complete picture pic-ture of the potential strength of the Broncos as they prepare for conference play. They open the conference on the local field against conference co-thamplons of Dixie College, the following week, Saturday, Sept 28, in another an-other night game. |
