Show Broncos Trim Boise, Lose To Ricks I I The College of Southern Utah basketball team continued its winning ways to soundly trounce a rather highly favored Boise Bronco team In the first of two games with Idaho teams last week end. The next night, however, how-ever, the CSU Broncos did not fare so well, as they tangled with a smooth, determined crew of Vikings from Kicks College. CSU trimmed Boise 81 to M handing the Idaho leaders their first loss of the season. The next night the Broncos fell before the Vikings by a score of 66 to 6! in- a game that was not decided until the final two seconds of play. The two Bronco teams gavt the spectators a real treat in the Thursday r.ight CSU-Boise game with a display of exception.il shooting, both sides hitting a phenomenal percenage of their shots. With bo'h teams hitting well and playing heads-up ball the game was quite close until about the three quarter mark, al-hough al-hough the local Broncos had held the advantage most of the time. At this point, however, CSl broke the game wide open with i's fast break tactics and registered regis-tered a lopsided victory. Paul Rasmussen. hitting exceptionally excep-tionally well from outside, led the scoring for CSU and the game with 2( poin's scored on 11 fioii' goals and four fouls in irht tries. Jim Rice, driving well enmr 110 with 21 nolnta whiln K"!1 Pugh, another hard charger ran?' up 15 points. Poor shooting froir 'he foul line, kept the visitor's score down. Friday night the Broncos were just as cold as they were hot thr night before, and also seemed to slow down their attack con slderably, with the result that 'he smooth working Vikingy Jumped into an early lead an.' then managed o hang onto the victory, 66 to 61. A bit of las! minute strategy paid off for the visi'ors and saved the game for them. With the score tied at 6-1-61 and 57 seconds let to play the Vikings elected to con'rnl the ball and try for one shot in the final seconds. With Shuie Brizzee handling the ball on the outside and watching the clock, the otftrs maneuvered under the basket. With two seconds left he passed to Newell Sargent at quarter quar-ter court, who took the shot and scored the winning basket. The Broticos scored first In the game, but were tied at 6-6 and then felj behind, the Vikirgs Jumping into a 17 to 6 lead. The Broncos came back, however, to close the gap to 15-17, and stay-, ed Just a few points behind un- JIM RICE Bronco Shannhnotnr I til Kent Pugh tied the score at 48-all on a foul shot with nine minutes and 47 seconds left ii 'he game. The lead then changed chang-ed hands several times until Ricks pulled ahead 58 to 53. Then Pugh closed the gap to 57 58 with a field goal and two foul shots. With time running out Ricks again pulled into the lead 02-57. but Pugh made another foul shot and Rasmussen two. and Rand Burr and Charles Brind-ley Brind-ley each scored from the field to tie the score at 64-all to set the stage for the visitors desperation shot finish. The exceptionally fine shoot-ing shoot-ing and rebounding of Larry Nal-der. Nal-der. and the general floor play of Brizzee and Sargent, kept the visitors in the lead most of the way. Nalder rang up 24 points for the top score of the game. |
