Show Elks Leadership Contest Award Winners Named for Southern Utah Travis Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Nelson and senior at the Cedar City High School, was named the first place winner win-ner In the BPO Elks Lodge annual an-nual Youth Leadership Contest this week. This coveted award Is presented present-ed each year to an outstanding high school student in the area who has distinguished himself in leadership ability. Cash prizes were awarded the top candidates in the contest and Nelson's application appli-cation will be forwarded to the Utah State Elks Association lor eompe'ition on a state-wide basis, ba-sis, according to Ralph Adams, secretary of the Cedar City loI;'. Second place winner In the contest was Stanley Miller of Panguitch High School and third place honors were awarded to Darlene Heaton of Alton, Utah, student at Valley High School in Orderville. Miss Heaton won first place In the girls' division of the contest Other winners included Tha ne Judd, Kanab, third place in the boys' division and Georgia Smith, Milford and Linda Knell, daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Page Knell, Cedar City second and third places In the girls' division of the contest. Four criteria are established for the contest and each con'est is judged in these four fields. Of a possible 100 points, Nelson, first place winner, garnered a total to-tal of 85 points in the eyes of the judges, who Included Howard J. Smith. Norman Heaton and Theron Ashcroft. Criteria Included: 1, Leadership Leader-ship initiative, organizational abili'y and influence on others; 2, Citizenship appreciation interest in-terest in and concern about our cherished privileges of citizenship citizen-ship under constituted government govern-ment and participation In community com-munity and Americanization programs; pro-grams; 3, Perseverance and resourcefulness re-sourcefulness as exemplified by their record in school, church, community, especially In overcoming over-coming difficulties, and 4, Sense of honor Integrity, honesty, sportsmanship, general character and reputation. Nelson is currently serving as president of the Cedar City High school and has since junior high school been a member of the student stu-dent council either as a class representative or In some other capacity. He has excelled in athletics as a member of the high school basketball, football and baseball base-ball teams. He was a member of the state Class B championship uaacuaii icaiii iii 2957, Was selected se-lected to the Region 10 all-star football team this past season; has participated in a state Class B basketball tournament while a junior and from all Indications Indica-tions will participate in that classic again this season. He has been a member of the boys' chorus of bo'h the junior and senior high schools and has also been in the cast of the school's opera for the past three years. In addition he is a member mem-ber of the Key Club quar'et and r : I TRAVIS NELSON has with that group won local and state honors in addition to entertaining throughout the Southern Utah area. For his activities in the priest-j hood of the LDS church he has been awarded a four-year at- tendance pin and has been active act-ive in church work for a num- ber of years. I I |
