Show Desert Mound Tips Columbia Miners To Take City Softball Championship Desert Mound came from be-j hind in the second half of the Cedar City softball league to capture cap-ture first place and give that team the league championship after winning both the first and second half. ! In one of the toughest games of the season played Tuesday evening Desert Mound beat Columbia Co-lumbia Iron Mines, which team was tied for the second half play, 5 to 4, in what could be called the league championship game. Desert Mound ended the regular reg-ular league season with a 15 win and 5 loss record. Its losses were suffered at the hand of Utah Parks, who tipped the champions cham-pions twice, the Iron County Record, Rec-ord, which won two from the miners, and Columbia who tipped tip-ped the winners in their second encounter of the season. League standings, with two make-up games to be played, both involving Bradshaw Chevrolet, Chev-rolet, are as follows: Desert Mound .. 8 2 .800 Columbia 7 3 .700 Utah Parks 6 3 .555 Record - 4 5 .444 Bradshaw 2 6 .250 Utah Const 1 9 -100 In the game between Columbia Colum-bia and Desert Mound, Columbia out-hit the mounders 11 to 4, but could not push over the necessary neces-sary runs. Desert Mound collected collect-ed two hits with Columbia committing com-mitting three errors and with two men hit by pitched balls in the fifth inning to score all five of its runs. Columbia's runs came two in the third and one each in the fifth and seventh. Bradshaw Chevrolet scored the most surprising upset of the season when it threw Utah Parks out of the running earlier in the week by downing that team 6 to 1. Bradshaw's could'nt be stopped, stop-ped, outhitting the Parks 10 to 2. Bradshaw has make-up games remaining with Utah Parks and Iron County Record. In other games played in the league during the week Desert Mound trounced Iron County Record Rec-ord 9 to 0 in a lop-sided affair. Desert Mound also won an encounter en-counter against Bradshaw Chevrolet Chev-rolet and Columbia walked over Utah Construction. Some outstanding ball has been played in the league this season with several extra inning in-ning games played. The longest of the season was an encounter between Utah Parks and Columbia Colum-bia which the Parks won 7 to 6 after 14 innings of pJay. With the first half ending in a three-way three-way tie for first Desert Mound played two games in one night, one a four extra-inning affair to emerge winner of the first half and thus set the team up for the league championship won on Tuesday evening. George Sturz-, Sturz-, enegger, chucker for the mounders, mound-ers, who pitched every game they played, has turned in an outstanding out-standing performance from the beginning to the end of the season. |
