Show Seventh Annual Softball Tourney Set for Next Week; Pairings Made Ten softball teams representing represent-ing southern Utah and eastern Nevada will vie next week for the championship of the Southern South-ern Utah Softball tournament to be held in Cedar City Wednesday, Wednes-day, Aug. 19 through Saturday, Aug. 22. Sponsored by the Cedar Softball Soft-ball Association the seventh annual an-nual tournament will feature the five outstanding teams of the Cedar City league pitted against five out of town teams including two from Delta, one from St. George, one from the Utah Parks and one from Pioche. Nev. Four of the Cedar City teams have definitely earned their way into the tournament. They include in-clude the four mine teams, Columbia, Co-lumbia, Iron Mountain, Desert Mound and Utah Construction. The fifth Cedar City entry will not be determined until early next week and will be either El Rey Cafe or Bradshaw with Paro-wan Paro-wan still in the running as an entry. Drawings for the first round of play have been made, according to Dee Cowan, secretary of the league, with the opening gamoi at 5:30 p. m. Wednesday pitting! the Cedar fifth place entry against the second place entry from Delta. Columbia will meet the first place Delta entry in the second game opening night, followed by Utah Parks and Utah Construction, and Desert Mound and St. George playing the nightcap at 10 p. m. Drawing a . bye for the first night, the other two entries, Iron Mountain and Pioche will meet in the first game Thursday evening, eve-ning, throwing five winners into the winners circle for the tournament tourna-ment championship. First night winners will not play in the second sec-ond evening of play, leaving losers los-ers of the Columbia-Delta game pitted against the loser of the Utah Parks-Utah Construction game. The third game Thursday evening will pit the loser of the Desert Mound-St. George game ! against the loser of the game between be-tween the Cedar fifth place entry and the Delta second place entry. en-try. In the championship bracket it will be necessary on both the third and fourth nights to draw for team byes in the 10-team tournament set-up with one consolation con-solation game being played on. i the third night and two cham- j pionship games completing the j evening's play. It is pointed out i that losers, after the first night of play will be eliminated from the tournament. In the final evening of play thiee teams will be vieing for the championship, necessitating a draw for bye and playoff of two teams to play in the championship champion-ship game. Between the two championship games the consolation conso-lation championship will be played off affording a rest for the team that has two games during the evening. Trophies for first place, consolation con-solation championship and a sportsmanship trophy will be given gi-ven plus a watch for the tournament's tourna-ment's most valuable player and a sweater for the tourney's outstanding out-standing pitcher. Tickets for the four day affair will be available early next week and patrons are urged to buy them in advance, eliminating a collection hazard at the park entrance. en-trance. Admission charge will be 50 cents per person per night, or $2.00 for a tournament pass. |
