Show Can Provo House Tourney Fans? A decision has been reached by the Utah High School Activities Association to hold the annual Class B basketball basket-ball tournament in Provo instead of Salt Lake City, and we are wondering if this will not have a tendency to turn the annual classic into a Utah County Affair. The reason we feel that this may result is the fact that Provo has so little to offer in the way of hotel and motel accommodations. The tournament is made up of 16 teams, with at least half of them coming from outlying schools making it necessary for the team members and their supporters to remain in the tournament city for the four days of the meet. We are wondering where and how Provo will house these "people, and at the same time take care of normal hotel and motel trade. There is no question about the B Y U fieldhouse being be-ing an ideal place for a tournament, with its 8,500 seating capacity. It is also closer to the majority of the teams than the U of U fieldhouse, and high school teams in that immediate vicinity always play an important part in the tournament. These teams frequently return to their homes after each game when they play in Salt Lake City, and certainly most of their supporters have done the same. The same has held true of the teams around Salt Lake City, and most of them will be able to do the same when the meet is at Provo. However, all other teams, three from the Sevier valley val-ley area, three from the Delta, Cedar, St. George district, one each from San Juan and the Uintah basin and probably prob-ably one or two from the North Summit-Wasatch area, must have hotel accommodations. The teams will probably be taken care of satisfactorily, but we doubt if many fans from these areas would be able to find accommodations. There is no doubt but that most of the seats of the new fieldhouse will be filled for the annual event, but it is doubtful if many supporters of teams from the far corners of the state will be able to see many games. |
