Show Guard Plans One-day Recruiting Drive Sat. A campaign tailored to safeguard safe-guard the nation's security and fill the ranks of the Utah National Na-tional Guard is set for Saturday, Oct. 8 throughout Utah. "Operation Safeguard" is the name given the one-day all-out recruiting drive for Utah Nation- 1 al Guard units in all quarters of the state. Every Utah Army Guardsman wUl be involved in the intensive drive Saturday. All units will meet for drills Saturday morning morn-ing and, after two hours' of armory ar-mory training, will spend the bulk of the day bringing in new members. Aircraft flyovers, downtown displays, jeep motorcases, armory open houses and airplane rides for new members will be among the activities occurring in many communities. An open house at the Cedar City Armory will get under way at 10 a m. with all equipment going on display. Four Jets from i the Air N. G. will also make a run over the city in connection wit the program at about 1:45 p. m. it is understood. The project tiUe, "Operation Safeguard," was chosen because of the National Guard's position as the nation's first line of reserve re-serve and "citizen-soldier" defense de-fense for more than 300 years, said Brig. Gen. Maxwell E. Rich, Utah adjutant general. Strength of the Army Guard in Utah now stands at approximate, ly 3,400 officers and men, but there are several hundred vacancies va-cancies to be filled. Intent of the drive is to bring units as close as possible to 100 per cent of auth-orized auth-orized strength, General Rich added. ad-ded. Air National Guard outfits' now are neariy full. |
