Show Coaching School Proves Huge Success Here High school coaches from southern Utah gathered at the Branch Agricultural college on Tuesday and Wednesday for the two-day Coaching School sponsored spon-sored and directed by Ray Lind-quist, Lind-quist, head of the Physical Education Ed-ucation department at the college. col-lege. The school was the first ever held in this area and was enthusiastically received by all who attended. Coach Vadal Peterson of the University of Utah and Dick Romney of the Utah State Agricultural Agri-cultural college acted as instructors, instruc-tors, showing a desire to help young coaches improve their technique In their chosen field, and imparting much valuable Information In-formation that most of those attending at-tending would have been unable to receive otherwise. Coach Peterson opened the first session with a detailed discussion discus-sion of the ten aspects of a well rounded basketball offensive, offen-sive, and outlined the ten points that he considers essential to build such an offense in any basketball squad. He worked out in detail for the visiting high school coaches the variety of styles that may be employed either individually, or in combinations combin-ations that will build for better offensive hoop play. Later in his first discussion Coach Peterson led a discussion on adjusting the offensive play of a squad to meet the two most commonly employed styles of defense used in this area the man-to-man and the zone and he summarized his discussion with the showing of pictures of the Utah U.-West Virginia game to emphasize the value of the fast break in offense. On the second day he developed develop-ed team defenses and individual play, and went into detail on drills to develop better team and individual play. Coach Dick Romney, in charge of football discussion at the school, spent the first afternoon stressing Individual play. He discussed dis-cussed and demonstrated the value of blocks, line and open field play, and placed special emphasis on the importance of the individual's part in the game of football, and his Importance to team play. Coach Romney emphasized em-phasized footwork lh blocking and tacking and developing the art of passing and pass receiving. receiv-ing. In his second discussion Coach Romney spent most of his time on team play and particularly on the passing game, which he views as the coming game in football. An interesting sidelight of the school was the series of motion pictures shown by both of the visiting instructors. The movies not only drew all of the student-coaches student-coaches to the B A C auditorium, but proved a strong drawing card for interested sports fans of the Cedar City area. The football and basketball picture of Utah and Utah State teams in action received a fine reception from the local fans.
