Show Selective Service I Boards To Reclassify J Deferred Registrants With the formal Declaration of War on the part of the United States against the Axis powers, Selective Service plans have rapidly changed, and a new law has been presented for Congressional approv- H al to change Selective Service from I a peace-time to a war-time basis. 1 In view of the present situation, 1 It has become necessary to ask lo- I cal boards to carefully reclassify H all registrants who have previously 1 been granted deferments, in order I to bring a larger number of registrants regis-trants into Class 1 to be available to fill future calls for men In the armed forces. All previously granted student deferments de-ferments will terminate with the end of the present fall quarter or term of college. Students, as such, will receive no further consideration considera-tion for deferment except those in training for certain necessary occupations oc-cupations such as engineering, medicine, me-dicine, and chemistry. All men who have heretofore been deferred because of physical condition, will be rechecked especially especi-ally when only borderline impairments impair-ments exist. Whereas, in the past, the registrant has been given the benefit of the doubt, all such cases must now be resolved In favor of the Government. Major H. A. Rich, Acting State Director of Selective Service for Utah, states that local Selective Service boards and registrants generally gen-erally realize that these steps are necessary at this time, and that full cooperation will be given in reclassifying all registrants to produce pro-duce a pool of sufficient Class 1 men to enable the State of Utah to continue to fill every quota as called for by the armed forces. |
