Show GERANIUMS FROM SEED. By ADELE J. POWELL. Last spring I purchased a package of "Largo Flowering California Geraniums," Ger-aniums," and plantod them In a pot about tho middlo of March. I kept tho soil moist and placed tho pot in p. sunny window, whoro In olgbt days tho first tiny plant made its appear anco, and from thon until some tlmo In Juno tho seeds kopt nominating, and when tho last ono was about an inch in height, tho othors wore sprouting tholr fourth and fifth leaves Thoro woro 18 altogether. As each llttlo geranium grow ita socond leaf, I transplanted it careful ly into a two-inch pot, and when 13 of them woro growing nlcoly, in May, I again transplanted all tho nico, bright-looking "babies" to a tub ol sandy soil, and put it out on tho west lawn. Horo thoy grow fast; for tho geranium gerani-um loves tho hot sun. In July I snipped off tholr tops, to mako thorn branch out. By tho first of September Septem-ber this tubful of geraniums were flno, stocky plants, from six to nine Inches high. About this tlmo I plantod another packet of geranium seeds. Thoy are in flno condition and growing nicely. I expect tho plants first from tho scods to glvo mo flowers this summer. They aro now In thrco-lnch pots, and I am n.ulto anxious to seo tholr blossoms. I shall keep nono but tha very best colors and best-formed florets. Thoso planted last Soptombor will probably blossom next, winter. For sovoral years I havo had good success with kcoping geranium slips over, also al-so with the old plants, by cutting the latter down. LaBt summer tho heads of my geraniums ger-aniums woro four Inches across. Thoy "woro of tho General Grant varioty, a deep glowing fed. I keep all my gen aniums In a bay window of tho living room whero the tomperaturo otton fallB to 40 degrees on, very cold win-tor win-tor nights. Every morning I pour about my largo geranium plants cold, weak toa, and dig tho tea loaves into tho soil. It is a splondld tonic for them, and koops tho loavos groon and thrifty. |
